Guy on a motorbike wearing a Nazi war helmet... dipshit or not?

On my morning walk I just saw a guy, looked to be a college student, on a small motorbike wearing a nazi soldier helmet as a bike helmet. What is your take on this?

Is he a disrespectful dipshit who has no clue about the connotation that helmet gives off to war vets and is just trying to be cool?...

or

Is it just cool, no big deal at all, in fact it signifies that we beat the damn Germans and now our kids are wearing their helmets to ride around in?

What do you think?

Plenty of people wear stuff with the hammer and sickle. Hell it is mainstream fashion a lot of the time. That ideology has killed and caused the genocide of just as many people, so I don't really see how it is different. I think a lot of fashion like this in general is just stupid, but don't find it offensive at all. Actually, I had a lot of relatives die on the eastern front for Germany, but I still have an old USSR flag hanging up in my garage that a Russian friend sent me, and I have an old authentic Nazi battle flag too. Perhaps that's the difference between white people, and blacks and Jewish people though, we don't have this inferiority complex running that compels us to get offended over past relations, and wrongs conducted between other nations and peoples.

wait.. do you mean the old school ww1 helmets? or the ww2 one's (which look a lot like today's helmets only made out of iron and not kevlar) the ww1 helmets, thats pre nazi party. had a spike on top. and arent that uncommon.. you shouldnt have any kind of nazi associations with that kind of helmet. no more then you should with BMW. but i mean, the only actual symbol on the ww2 helmets is the knights cross which isnt really that tabu.

either unless it had a huge swastika on it then i dont get your point.

Nazi WWII helmet. No emblem on it, but original color of the german soldier back then.

And I'm not talking about *my* reaction here at all, so no need to come at me from that angle. I'm asking you, what do YOU think. And maybe try tempering your response by trying first to see it through the eyes of war vets who actually fought the nazis. There aren't many around anymore, granted, but there are still quite a few here where I live.

I'm just wondering what the consensus is on it, that's all. I realize not everyone is going to see it all one way.

I doubt a war vet would really care about seeing a German helmet, especially with no emblem. He would more likely just think it was another idiot teenager trying to be cool, and move on. I think a war vet might be a little more bothered when he turns on MTV don't you?

Seriously.... depends on context.. My grandfather actually was trained in the Nazi youth corps and fought for the Germans in the war, but I never considered him to be a Nazi. He used it as a way to get out of the Polish slums and not starve to death. His history is something I am quite proud of. He wasn't mentally part of the whole "let's exterminate the Jews" ideal. His unit fought on the Russian front (so he didn't like Russians much at all because of that, and that 6 of his friends got killed by a Russian land mine and he lost his leg as well). My grandparents also weren't very fond of the British coming in and taking the "spoils of war" and forcing german families to live 3/4/5 families to one and two bedroom apartments.

Anyways, I ramble. Technically, my grandfather would be considered a Nazi by anyone without a clue just because he was a German soldier. The whole uniform/helmet/whatnot has no effect on me. It can be in very poor taste if someone wears it certainly, but hey, if he's using it as a brainpan on his motorcycle (it would look especially appropriate on something from that era) perhaps he has his own reasons and they have nothing to do with what everyone else might get in a tizzy over.

I think some might. We're talking about men who get miffed at you for walking into a legion and not removing your hat. They are pretty big on respect for the vet.

You're probably right for a lot of them. Possibly not all, but a good many.

Absolutely. Then again, they did fight for the cause of freedom. What people do with that freedom is of course up to them.

Personally, out of respect for the veterans and what they sacrificed for us, I wouldn't go wearing such a helmet, cool or not. That's just me though, not everyone is going to see it that way, thus the thread.

A few years back a Jewish teacher found a swastika painted on his door and it was considered a hate crime. I think he should have left it up on his door until the end of the time as a constant reminder that the Nazis were beat down.

They are big with the black guys here in Florida.. It's funny when you see some nimrod on a sport bike wearing one. Then again I'm here in Daytona so I'm used to seeing them.

His dad or grandfather probably gave it to him, or he watched a lot of 60's and 70's biker movies, because they used to be quite popular.

Well my reaction is, its just a helmet. I mean, there is probably an inherent symbolism with the general design of the helmet. But then again, in this day and age you have to go to new extremes to provoke more then the generation before you. However i dont think it should be illegal or even unusual. To me its just a helmet design. It might be that more people associate that kind of helmet with "combat style helmets" IE it gives you associations to soldiers in general as opposed to associations of the German army during WW2. But yeah, im cool with it he can ride past me any day.

I would say it's just a fashion choice really. Unless it's got symbols all over it, then it's ok.

I remember when I was about 12, I went to a theme park and there was this huge 6'6" biker dude wearing a sleevless vest. The guy had huge muscles. He had a huge swastika on his arm among other logos. I wanted to call him a Nazi scumbag and run off but was advised against it. Suffice it to say, I've never seen somebody like that ever again.

Dont worry those helmets give no safety to the head, so take comfort that one day his face will be dragging down the highway. What people will do for attention.

BINGO! Nobodies been persecuted worse than the white guy has in modern times and yet we keep on ticking... Nobody listens when we cry foul... when all these minority groups spout off racist things about white guys who does anything?

How many people are actually alive from the Nazi death camps? How many blacks alive today were slaves? shit not even many had to sit on the back of the bus... Those that did carry themselves 10x more respectfully than their grandchildren stirring up shit do... (I prefer the back of the bus)

If it didn't happen to you personally you have absolutely no right to take it personally.

Anyone that would get upset about the helmet should probably be even more upset that the rider was being forced to wear one.

Actually, he may have been making a statement against what he felt were Naziesque helmet laws.

Along the same lines do you think someone is a dipshit when they wear a Che Guevara shirt or Cuban Communist military hats since Che murdered a lot of innocent people?

Looks like just about 50% of the consensus here has him being a douche.

Somewhere, in a french college in the heart of Winnipeg, Canada, there is a 19 or 20 yr old kid, probably sitting in class, who has no idea why his ears are burning.
