I don't like flying, but I'm not afraid.
I got a headache most of the times I flew. That's why I don't like it.
I will try some painkillers next time (which I always forget to take). A flight of more than 12 hours awaits me at the end of the month.

Then some will trot out the "yeah but I'm in control of the car" argument. Pure bunk. You're not in control of the 17 million other cars on the road. Fact is flying is safer, period.

its not how often you die , its HOW you die.

In a car crash you usually don't know what to expect except for a split second beforehand.

If your wing breaks off during flight you will have a long time before you crash

I LOVE flying and plan on taking lessons so I can fly myself I used to work at ATL and would always plan on eating my lunch in a closed Eastern terminal that was closest to the runway where the planes took off and landed right at lunch time.

We were on an little 8 seater puddle jumper Eastern plane flying from Atlanta to Hilton Head and hit a HORRIBLE storm. We couldn't land with the wind blowing the way it was coming in normally so we had to fly several miles out over the ocean to turn around for the landing. It was scary but still a total adrenaline rush

(Yes, I like roller coasters too.......)

Not scared of flying itself... More scared of my teeth!!!

I'll explain... I once flew from UK to LAX and unknown to me I had a few small cavities in my teeth... At 35,000 feet, air pressure is different in cabin, and in the teeth... Result?

Incredible pain... I passed out from it! Now, if Im going to fly I allways visit the dentist first!!!

That is an overly simplified way of viewing the statistics.

The fact is that, once you adjust the data for the amount of time a person spends in a car versus the amount of time spent in a plane, it becomes very clear that the fatality rate PER HOURS SPENT TRAVELING is much greater when flying.

Oh, and I don't like flying

Pack a parachute in your carry on.

Btw, a chute won't do much for you if you have to bail out of your car at 60 mph.

You're of course free to spin it any way you wish. What about all the millions of people who fly several hours every day for business? Do some of you even know how many flights there are every day, and how many people are on those flights? Yet you hardly ever heard of a plane going down, and when you do it's a big deal... because it is a rare occurance.

In the time I took to type this, 1000+ cars crashed, several hundred people died. But you go with your argument. :D

The most dangerous time in a commercial jetliner flight is landing, and that includes taxing to the gate.

Take off is risky too, but somewhat less so.

Cruising on a commercial jetliner is so safe these days that about the only thing one has to worry about during that part of the flight is the extremely remote possibility of being shot down by the government*.

* I say government, because 1. there have been numerous close calls (and some actual shootdowns abroad) over the years, and 2. rocket launchers, such as terror groups have, don't have the precision / range to reach an airliner 5+ miles (in reality the range would have be even further yet adjusting for angle) above the ground.

Ron

It's never phased me a bit, but my best friend who lives in NYC (I live in TX) has developed an intense fear of flying over the last several years for seemingly no reason. It's almost to the point where he can't fly at all. As it is, he has to take heavy sedatives just to walk onto the plane. It worries me because his job pretty much depends on his ability to travel, plus I don't see him as often.

I've never been nervous during a flight. The only time I get edgy is when I'm really bored.

When I used to fly, I was white knuckled scared on take-offs and landings, till one day, the 6 year old next to me said .. Lady, what's wrong? .. look at all the fluffy clouds.

So now when ever I'm scared I can hear that lil voice in my head ... look at the clouds.

Now I don't fly, cause it's annoying, not scary.

Nice thought

I flew jetblue a ton when I was in college.. 50 min flights where sweet..

I still get scared out of mind at the little bit of turbulence.. if i ever get really bad turbulence I dont know what I would do

But I survived a roundtrip to thailand I think I can handle anything under 17 hours now if its a nice plane

I'm not scared of flying, but don't like traveling at 500+MPH without seeing ahead. Not a fan of take offs and landings either, but I would never miss a trip because of flying. Actually I flew many small Cesnas and was the pilot of many gliders and I absolutely loved every second of flying like that.

So much so, that I want to get my pilot license for single engine planes and gliders. I guess it's the whole "not being in control" thing is what makes me feel uncomfortable during some flights.
