On 95th percentile you can assume 1mbitis equal to 225 gigs conservatively.

Regardless of the conversions, you can't set a capped plan based on that or you are going to have problems. I would recommend 3-5 mbps capped for that. The more you can afford, the better.

Do you have a link to your mrtg charts? You can grab me on ICQ if you like, I can take a look and help walk you through it.

Theoreticall, but never in practice based on the peaks and valleys of usage. To do 320 gigs someone would have to run at 1mbps steady for 30 days straight.

If you're on a 500GB plan then that probably means you get 500GB included, then pay an excess rate for anything above that. If there's somewhere showing you're "using" 4.5Mbps then you'd better get onto your host ASAP, because if that's an average for the month then you're transferring more like 1500GB.

rowan: Very unlikely, unless his traffic patterns are basically a flat line at 4.5Mbps with occasional peaks higher. This can vary very sharply depending on your particular patterns.

The theoretical worst case scenario on a 30 day month is:
(500 GB) / (1.5 days) = 31.6049383 Mbps

The theoretical best case scenario on a 30 day month is:
(500 GB) / (30 days) = 1.58024691 Mbps

The most likely answer 2-3 Mbit.

Peaks and valleys only matter in 95th percentile billing (which I think is a huge scam to start with). One of my servers years ago was on 95th percentile billing and I could never figure out why my bandwidth use more than tripled after switching to that host. Turns out I wasn't using more, they were just measuring it "differently". Lesson learned, doing paid gallery spots with a 95th percentile billing system doesn't work so good ;)

On average billing it should work out to exactly 320 gigs shouldn't it? Paying for what you use makes sense to me, I don't see what the point of 95th percentile billing is other than for hosts to rip off clients with bandwidth spikes.

So if you run a legal tube site for example, what kind of hosting deal is best? I can see how the 95th percentile would be an issue lol..

Average billing is not used by anyone, anywhere.
GB's are not based off average billing. Average billing costs more than 95th percentile.
All hosts pay the industry standard, 95th percentile to their backbones. WE pay 95th percentile to our backbones, and in turn you pay the same way too us, not sure how that is ripping you off. We are billed for the 95th percentile amount that you use, and you are billed for the same amount.

The conversion ratio from Mbps to GB is based off the peaks and valleys of usage.

Tidalwave is 100% correct. Hosts buy bandwidth from carriers on 95th percentile. Billing clients on any other measurement does not have a direct tie back to the host cost structure. The bulk of per GB plans are offered at hosts who plan on oversubscription, having clients that don't use their allowance. Typically the moment you go over your allowance you're into overages that'll put your translated per GB to per megabit rate at $40-$100/mbit or greater.

Looking at the bottom graph it appears you would have exceeded 500GB/mo long ago, roughly November or December 2007...

What an idiotic comment.... I understand you like to spam your host, but still ...

The guy host a jpg of his bw usage on a free host, so that we do not know what exact site it is ... not because he is cheap or so ...

As for Electric Lights , a package with 1500 gb would suffice for your needs,. That would be on a 10 mbps port, so plenty for your usage. An extra 500 gigs ( premium bandwith ) cost about 25.00 with us. Basic packages stats at 99.00 / month.
