    What would the US look like if native Americans had kept the land?

    A tribe so isolated from civilization that they've never had contact with anyone from Columbus to us today has been found in Brazil.

    You hear native Americans talk about how the white man stole their land and how they shouldn't have been there in the first place. Well, what you see above is how the indians would still be living today. That sort of thing is proof of what happens when whites don't have their hands in the development of an area. NOTHING HAPPENS. Entire populations remain, by definition, stone men.

      Seriously, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
      MAYBE if no one ever made contact with the native Americans... MAYBE.
      But it's not like a continent of people would go unnoticed by the rest of the world until now.
      They'd still be exporting fish, lumber, crops... and importing beer.

              Possibly, but they were many thousands of years behind the development of the rest of the world (they were still in the stone age when whitey took the land). We've been trying to help develop Africa for decades and that isn't working. It seems like something that can't be forced by outside cultures. So I'm not too confident that Europeans would have ever been able to work with an alternative America.

                      They were hardly in the stone age. They had sophisticated tools and cultures. They were the first to learn how to grow what is now the most important crop in the world. Having guns and a better immune system doesn't make another group part of the stone age.

                      As for Africa, we haven't tried to develop that at all. We just pillage it for their natural resources. Look at what the diamond companies have been doing. Look at what we do in Tanzania with their fish. It also has a much tougher time catching up because of the harsh climates and lack of transportation.

                                          What are we naturally superior at? Last time I checked, every record, the money, whatever - is mixed between all races.

                                                                      Here we are exploring Mars, and being maybe two decades away from sending people there. Then you look at this photo of an isolated society and you see that flimsy grass huts and wooden stick weapons are their two biggest technological advancements.



                                                                      I'll bet they haven't even invented the wheel yet. In fact, native Americans didn't know what a wheel was until Europeans showed them one.

                                                                                          Oh I bet they have some killer hunting tools and medicines for sure. Very sophisticated for the resources available to the people. And it's possible they melt different types of ores they find in rivers, for arrow heads, axes, ect.. It's all about what resources they have.

                                                                                          Just think of everything they know, that you don't. It's not like you can actually build an entire car, or even know how to - or could probably even explain it. Yet, these people, can make medicines - I'm sure most people reading this don't know dick about the subject.

                                                                                                  The wheel was only invented in about two places - the Fertile Crescent (present day Middle East) and China. It may not even have been invented in China and instead transmitted there by people in the Fertile Crescent the way it was transmitted to Europe through conquest.

                                                                                                  Western civilization (not to be confused with Western cultures) was the first to recognize and promote universal principles like human rights, freedom, equality, reason, and logic and is IMO superior to other civilizations, technologically and socially. Before Western civilization, other civilizations across the world in every continent (eg. Aztec in S. America, Minoan in Europe, Egypt in Africa, Shang Dynasty in China etc), were technologically and socially advanced at different times and in different ways, but none recognized all the principles above.

                                                                                                  Thanks to philosophers like Socrates and arguably religions like Christianity, those bedrock principles of Western civilization spread (imperfectly, mind you) across Europe and from there to other continents. Nobody could have foreseen or predicted any of this. Yet we're all the beneficiaries of it and should be grateful.

                                                                                                  But it's a bit of a stretch to compare some small isolated tribes and to speculate about how two entire continents would have developed. Who knows, the Mayan and Aztec cultures might have spread and killed off these small tribes or assimilated them. Those civilizations had more than spears and huts. They may not be sending rockets into space (history, culture, and religion influence our motivations to explore and the raw materials around us influence it as well) but they may not be living in huts either.

                                                                                                      Honestly I don't understand why people would give a fuck about development. I bet the people here in modern area's have a more depressing life than those living in the jungle, isolated from the modern world.

                                                                                                      People always act like development is a good thing, but sometimes it's best to not know everything. I've seen some of those tribes and they have the most beautiful traditions and culture. You don't see any of that here in the city.
