    (Hackers) Does anyone know how down a stolen laptop? (reward inside)

    Some dickwad ripped my macbook air out of a party at my house. I want to find the muther fucker. Does anyone know how you can track down a laptop by someone else using it?

    I will gladly pay to bust this ashole.

              do you have any software on it that would automatically communicate with some server when it is connected to a network? The best would be if you have something like a dyndns client, but other software such as automatic backup software would also work. If so, you could get his ip and then go from there.

                          There's different software you can get that will notify a central server every time the computer is turned on, with it's current IP address and even webcam shots if you have a builtin webcam, but unless you had that setup in advance, there's not much you can do. I don't know if these programs are available for OSX either.

                          Sorry to hear about the theft, having your laptop stolen sucks horribly, especially if it's your primary computer.

                                                                          Several software manufacturers, and Apple itself, will send periodic prompts to update the software on your computer (Adobe, Microsoft, Norton, etc).

                                                                          Therefore, it seems possible that the criminal mastermind that swiped your notebook, may at some point try to download a free upgrade and thereby tip-off the software company as to their IP address.

                                                                          Depending upon how valuable the contents were, it might be worth pursuing.

                                                                          In any case, good luck getting your computer back!

I registered at their site and added all info about my laptop including serial numbers of network cards and their MAC addresses. In case the laptop is stolen, they track it using this info.

                                                                                          log all IP's hitting that resource and provide me with the date time and IP and I can give you a name

I had my laptop stolen while on the road a couple of years ago. And of course it had ALL of my info on it. I spent all day with a fucking hangover changing every password and every pin. Hundreds of them.
                                                                                                                                  So since I do need my info when I'm on the road as well as ftp to all my sites, etc. etc. I now use an encrypted hard drive on my laptop as well as Waves security to even access the system and/or hard drive. So if it happens again at least they can't get my data. I would suggest to everybody that you do the same with any computer that is mobile...and hell even your machines at home in case of a theft while you're not there.

I guess he had pcanywhere installed, logged on and saw the email address. Was able to track down the person the laptop was SOLD too. Sure enough the cops eventually went to the house once the report was filed and boom, they got it back.

This way you can find the mac adress if you´re in the range of the respective wifi signal.

                                                                                                                                                                              BUT:

                                                                                                                                                                              1. i guess you don´t know how an oscilloscope works.

                                                                                                                                                                              2. an oscilloscope costs at least about 3000$ (much more than your macbook), and most likely you don´t already have one.

                                                                                                                                                                              3. even if point 1 and 2 do not apply, your chances of being successfull this way are very very low. so just as it´s been said, if it doesn´t have a gps function implemented you can consider it lost.
