Can you give a dog antihistamines?
I'm waiting to hear if i can get my dog into the vet today, she's really swollen in the face & itching like crazy..i have no idea whats up. The last time this happened she had an allergic reaction to a shot the vet gave her, this time i have no idea whats up.
I'm wondering if anyone has ever given their dog an antihistamine, like benadryl...to stop allergic reactions. Just trying to buy some time until i can get her into the vet...i'm all worried about her ![]() |

I dont know about benadryl, but my mom took a quarter Comtrex pill and dissolved it in water for her dog.
It worked for him. |

Antihistamines
Antihistamines can be used with relative safety in dogs. About one third of owners report success with them. The major drawback, as with people, is sedation. Dr. Ackerman recommends that a minimum of three different types of antihistamines be tried before owners give up on this therapy. According to Dr. Johnson, the most common problem with this type of treatment is that owners give the drugs at doses that are too low. Check with your vet on correct dosing. Examples of antihistamines commonly used for dogs include: Tavist, Benadryl, Chlortrimeton, Atarax and Seldane. Personally, I have seen the best results with Atarax. http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/medica...allergies.html |

Don't know that one but here's an interesting canine puzzle.
I've been giving my dog these Chocolate Drops - they were in the Pet Store and are labeled as a dog treat. Despite warnings to the contrary on the internet and from friends and family my dog is alive and well.

my dog has terrible allergies. he takes a shitload of drugs daily. Chlortrimeton is great. benadryl doesn't work the same w/ dogs as it does w/ humans(it's pretty weak on dogs). i give my 60lb dog 12mg 3x a day of Chlortrimeton(or something similar) i have to disagree w/ mika and the dr who said drowsiness is a side effect. drugs act differently on dogs than humans. the antihistamine i give the dog is a human made drug, but if i take the dose i give my dog, i'll be out for days. the only thing you want to avoid is cortizone shots... it's ok to do it a couple times, but not good to make a habit or be dependent on it. it'll shorten the life of the dog. my dad's a pharmistist so i've got a list of drugs you can give a dog if you want. good luck
