Johnny Cash is the fucking man, period. I did hear his music before the film came out, and I'm 23

Not trying to even begin to compare him to any other artist/band, but you might like Murder By Death:

(They are not what you would think by the name...just took it from this movie - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_By_Death)

My mom played him all the time and even took me to a few concerts as a child. At the time I was upset for being forced to go... if only I had known the awesomeness back then.

I didnt say people didnt know of him, I said most hadnt heard his music. The movie brought his music back into the mainstream and radio stations started playing his music again.

There's a bar called "Johnny's" in Huntington Beach, CA that pays tribute to Johnny Cash. Their slogan is "If you don't like stiff drinks and Johnny Cash, don't let the door hit you in the ass." It's my fav watering hole

Johnny Cash is a legend in both Country and Rock music. He was to Elvis what the Rolling Stones were to the Beatles - more edgy and dark...

A few chestnuts courtesy of YouTube (someone said that direct linking was messed up, so I posted the text link below each video):

The Man In Black performing "Folsom Prison Blues"

One of my favorite Johnny Cash cover songs...Social Distortion performing "Ring of Fire" (Live).

I practically cry every time I hear Johnny Cash perform his cover of Trent Reznor's (Nine Inch Nails) "Hurt"...the last song he recorded before he died.

Johnny Cash performing "Hurt" by NIN.

You'll have to click to see this one since embedding was disabled, but please to take time to check it out.

And finally, two of his classics, "I Walk the Line" and "Ring of Fire", performed live at age 71 in his final performance ever:

Johnny Cash's last live performance at a family event in July 2003, performing "I Walk the Line" and "Ring of Fire".

A few footnotes...

Quote:
Johnny Cash sold over 90 million albums in his nearly fifty-year career
Quote:
June Carter Cash (Johnny's wife) died on 15 May 2003, at the age of seventy-three. June had told Cash to keep working, so he continued to record and even performed a couple of surprise shows at the Carter Family Fold outside Bristol, Virginia. (The 5 July 2003, concert was his final public appearance.)

At the 21 June 2003, concert, before singing "Ring of Fire", Cash read a statement about his late wife that he had written shortly before taking the stage. He spoke of how June's spirit was watching over him and how she had come to visit him before going on stage. He barely made it through the song. Despite his poor health, he spoke of looking forward to the day when he could walk again and toss his wheelchair into the river near his home.

Johnny Cash died less than four months after his wife, on 12 September 2003.
RIP Johnny Cash...
