Yes, it's the same as what I have. It has a 6 second check, i.e. if the power is out for 6 seconds, it starts up. We don't have natural gas here so it's hooked up to my propane tank (330 gallons). Like PK I bypassed the AC - also bypassed the heat. In the summer my basement is VERY cool and the fans will work and in the winter, I have a fireplace, a gas heater and electric floor heaters if needed :)

It checks itself for 15 minutes every Monday morning. Once the power went out while it was checking itself and it wasn't until after about 30 minutes I started questioning why it was still checking itself ;) There's a small LED panel (the size of a light switch) in my basement and if there's a problem, it blinks. There are, I think, 9 different things it can tell me is a problem.

The main transfer switch is before the electrical panel in my house so I can turn off any power I need to in the house w/o it kicking in. The transfer switch is right below the toilet in my guest room and I tell you from experience, it makes QUITE a noise when it kicks in ;)

For everything - installation, all the electrical and gas was $7K. I had a smaller ($5500) quote but I wanted the Briggs and Stratton and it was more expensive. I can't remember the actual specs - I have a small house though.

Here's a picture I took when it was installed:

Best thing I have EVER bought for myself (besides the TiVo :thumbsup )

I'm pretty good as long as I have water, but I used to live out in the woods a loooong time ago and yah it sucked when the power went out.

It was weeks sometimes after a hurricane or something.

But yah no power meant no water = no flushing toilets or taking showers = sucks ball (or not) :-)

Our water is system is HOA owned and operated, no personal wells, thank goodness (we have septic tanks, but they aren't power run, thank goodness). When our power was out for 30+ hours, the community water pump was the first place they got power to. Until then, you could hear THAT generator running like crazy.

I did find out an electric hot water heater will keep water hot for at least 24 hours. :)

You also forgot to mention the high capital costs involved with a solar installation. :)

No high costs of anything. All that is part of the deal. Most can be leased to own. It all depends on your power needs too. In general, the monthly payments are a little cheaper than your current electric bill and with the buy back they can be $10-$20 cheaper monthly.

Your location, amount of sun, makes a difference I'm sure. Here we have 300+ days a year of sun shine.

You should try living in Russia. It's rare to have hot water, eletricity, or phones all at the same time.

A lot of cities/states now offer incentive programs so people start trying out other methods of energy. They really are not advertised much though. I know California was paying like half of the setup fee for wind turbines...

As time goes on, it will be cheaper and cheaper to set up alternate installations like this. I always kind of wonder why these rich billionaire philanthropists spend all sorts of money on aid and whatnot instead of into research and development that could seriously help mankind for the long run. There is something wrong with aid of course... but research and development is so important and unfortunately governments do not always have the money to properly fund it and when they do it's all bureaucratic red tape anyway...

You usually don't go out camping with hundreds of dollars of food in a fridge and freezer, have to look nice for a function or bring dogs along that don't do well in the heat :thumbsup
