Don't get me wrong, I love my dogs. But when they start costing that kind of money, I can get a bullet and another dog that looks just like them, for a lot less.

My old dog (collie-husky cross) lived to be over 17 yrs old, I fed him a diet of high-end dry dog food and often mixed in a little extra meat scraps, rice, whatever, mixed with a little warm broth or water. The fact that he lived healthy for years longer than most dogs says I did something right. In all those years I did have to get his teeth scaled and a lump removed from his face which required a general anaestetic. Also had him fixed when he was about 1 and a half yrs old.

All that and all his vet visits combined added up to just under $2k... but in my view a dog is part of the family very much like a child to a lot of dog owners. If Warchild wants to spring for his pooch's surgery then I say bravo. Too bad there aren't more pet owners who care enough to do what it takes to provide their animal with good health care.

Of course there will always be haters who just don't get that and never will.

My mutt I got at the humane society for 25.00 had Parvo when I got her. She was 6 weeks old. The pound told me she was in good health, the vet a week or 2 later disagreed. She was even running a temperature and they told me it was normal.

So after things coming out both ends for a few days she went off to the vet. She was on iv there for 3 days, and this is back when I was fairly poor. So I was sitting looking at around 90.00 per day. On day 4 I called in ready to tell them to put her to sleep, and they told me she was well and to come in and get her. So now 12 1/2 years later she is still playful as ever and always my loyal buddy. Haven't taken her to the vet since. Not for a checkup not for anything as the only issues she has had since is occasional blockages which I solved by giving her some cooked ground beef and rice. She has done just fine off Ole Roy dog food from walmart. She is part lab and part terrier and I love her. I would do whatever I could to keep her healthy, but 8 grand is a bit excessive especially at her age now. :( Moral of the story is stick to mutts. Bred dogs are racked with issues.

Warchild can afford it, apparently, and his dog is worth it, to him anyway. I know if my dog's vet had ever told me an operation was needed and going to cost me several thousand I'd have paid it without a second thought. Wouldn't trade the years I had with him for anything.

Btw nice pooch you have there.

These kind of horror stories made me get pet insurance when I got my pup about 6 months ago. 30 bucks month.

I look at it this way...would I rather spend $2000 in five years for nothing, or $2000 in 5 minutes because of a swallowed stick. I'll take the five year plan, cause chances are good that my dog will get sick or injured -- and he's turning out to be a little neckbreaker.

I personally am not huge into spending massive amounts of money on pets... but I see no reason for some of the comments in this thread. Good God, I can be a cold asshole sometimes but messing with somebody's loved ones, human or animal, you just shut up and move along.

Good luck with the surgery, hope it helps.

I dont have the patience for raw but it is the best thing you can feed your dog. May your dog have a speedy recovery :)

I wish. She's a rescued Rottweiler. She literally came from a street corner in Costa Rica. Her genes are pretty much terrible. :(

50 for sick doggies...

I hope you pooch gets better soon... I always hate to see a sick kid or animal they just have no way to tell you how to make them feel better.
