(how) did the poker industry recover from the online gambling ban in the US ?

2-3 years ago after online gambling and poker reached unprecedented heights, the US decided to ban online gambling. Lots of poker sites went down, and bids for poker terms on PPC SE's had fallen dramatically .

Now it seems the industry somehow recovered, my friend told me they just changed their marketing to a worldwide clientele.

I see even on such a shitty PPC SE like 7search.com that poker/casino bids are at around 5 dollars per click now

But the ban is still there, right? And you still can't pay with your VISA or MasterCard for online gambling if you're an American? BTW seems like Neteller is running fine as well, but if I'm not mistaken two years ago the owners got arrested in the US.

anyway, just some questions/observations. Anyone has been following it more closely?

Poker sites went down? Do you mean poker rooms or affiliate sites?

US players use online money services like epassporte to fund their accounts and also eChecks.

Neteller is still up and running, afaik they dont accept US citizens anymore but everyone outside the US still uses them and had no disruptions to their account when the the owners got arrested.

If you check the profits of listed casino/poker sites they never did recover as such. Sure - many survived but on lower profits than before. There's a huge world outside of the US though so more than enough to keep the better sites making some decent cash despite losing many of their US customers.

Absolute, sportsbook poker, poker.com all except Visa from Americans.Business got hurt, America trying to pass a bill to allow certain sites to legally run in the U.S. as long as they and the players pay taxes on revunue and winnings

Its still very difficult for USA players to get money into their accounts to play. Most of the third party depositers including epass are no longer an option for USA players. My experience is that the larger poker sites have gotten very sneaky in helping USA players get money into their accounts. For example, last week I fired up UltimateBet and decided to play some. My first couple of credit cards got declined, even ones that had worked before. I got messages to call in to UB's customer service. After talking to them and trying a bunch of credit cards for them to manually process over the phone, I finally got one to go through, what a pain. They told me that the charge would show up as Home Supply Store and that it would be for $499.75 and not the $500 (so it wouldn't trigger any suspicion) The lady on the phone told me that if my credit card called to tell them that I authorized the charge and not to mention anything about it being for gambling.

Obviously they have gotten very sneaky by not letting the credit card institutions know that the charges are for gambling purposes. I'm not sure how long they are going to get away with this, but certainly they are circumventing the law.

I heard on talk show radio the other day that they plan to lift the US ban now that the government will get their piece of the pie. I have still been able to gamble every day during this period, but most of my players though it was illegal, creating a 80% drop in my gambling revenue in a 30 day period. Fucking government...

Like somebody said PokerStars is taken over in Europe and have expanded to doing televisioned poker tours in Asia and now also Latin America. Poker is getting much bigger outside of US.

The sunday million at PokerStars is stable at about 7000 players per week. All paying $200+$15 fee

But the money tables is where the real money is in aka. Rake.

The players at PokerStars has increased since the ban because of good solid marketing from the Marketing staff at PokerStars.

I heard 2 years ago that PokerStars was estimated for $3 Billion if they went stock. I bet it's even more now..

How do winners get money out of such sites? -though I assume virtually no one ever really wins much.

It's poker we're talking about. People make serious cash from it. After all the house cut is fairly small so all the winnings have to go somewhere. Fancy going fishing anyone? ;)

the gaming industry in america has a strong lobby. I will never understand why they didnt embrace it. I think right off the bat they would of had the trust factor, who would you trust more to gamble online with Trump or Harrahs or Bally's or some casino from some little island in the middle of nowhere.

I wouldn't consider 10% of the buy-in to be a small house cut. On EuroPoker for example are up to 15,000 players at the same time. They are making a lot of money every minute 24/7 at basically no real expenses. They only pay for hosting and support, no?
