Did you ever notice that Billy Corgan's look resembles Jack Skellington? Or that both The Smashing Pumpkin's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas used the same font type? Or even that Jack's dog is named Zero, the same name as the Pumpkin's hit song displayed on Corgan's now infamous t-shirt? Coincidence? The music of The Smashing Pumpkin's Today synched to Tim Burton's The Nightmare before Christmas. These two haunting masterpieces were undoubtedly meant to hold hands.

It's interesting because both the movie and the song were released the same year, but I don't really think it matches enough to prove the theory. You could probably sync up a ton of other groups songs with the same BPM and make it work.

I think it is just a coincidence. The song was released a few months before the movie which means it was probably written and recorded a year or more before the movie was released. That is not to say that Corgan didn't see the movie in advance. But he has spoken pretty openly about how this song is about his feeling suicidal so I don't think it was meant as a soundtrack of sorts to the movie.

If you look and listen hard enough, almost any music can go with any scene.
