I'm not a big horse racing enthusiast, but I usually watch the Triple Crown races and a few other big derby races.
I didn't realize until I did a little research just now how common it is for horses to die as a result of racing:
At Bay Meadows Racecourse in San Mateo, 25 horses died during the 55-day season that ended in April, a spike over the 16 fatalities recorded for all of 2006.The California Horse Racing Board compelled its member tracks to shell out millions of dollars to replace dirt with softer, more forgiving synthetic surfaces following consecutive nightmarish years marred by grisly death counts:
320 for the 2004-05 fiscal year and 317 in 2005-06, an increase of 32 percent from the average number for the previous eight years.

Pretty shocking.
But the Kentucky Derby people must be breathing a sigh of relief that she came in second and not first. Imagine the nightmare of having to put the winner down right there.
I'll bet that horse would have won had it not been for the broken legs.Comment

Yeah that was pretty awful man. Sat and watched the race, and then wham, dead animal. If it's the surface, then they need to fix it. If it's the bulk of muscle too heavy for safe running, they need to fix that.43-922-863 Shut up and play your guitar.

The problem is that so many horses have been bred with the Native Dancer bloodline that horses are very brittle now because of it. I've seen estimates that 75% of thoroghbreds have been crossed with that line.
Native Dancer's line produces fast, muscled up horses that are prone to leg injuries. Eight Belles is a Native Dancer descendant through her dam's sire.
The horse went down as soon as the bones broke. Two broken bones would not have supported the horse's weight. They were broken as she pulled up after the race was over.Comment
