    Age of consent in Canada rises to age 16 (was 14)

    Canada's age of sexual consent will be bumped up two years to 16 beginning today.

    The change means adults who have sex with boys or girls aged 14 and 15 years old could face criminal charges.

    Canada's age of consent has been 14 since 1892.

    The legislation was brought in by the government in part to deal with older Internet predators who troll the Web looking for young victims.

    Canada's age of consent will now be in line with other countries, such as Britain, and most U.S. states.

    The intent of the new law is not to criminalize teenage sex, but to crack down on adults who prey on youth, former justice minister Vic Toews said when the bill making the change was introduced.

    The law includes a "close-in-age" provision of five years, which means it would be legal for a 15-year-old to have relations with a 19-year-old provided the relationship is not exploitive and the older party is not in a position of authority or trust.
    Now if our authorities could figure out a way to actually give offenders some meaningful jail time the plan would be perfect.

          16 is good. Should be 16 for all of America, too.

          Why?

          Because if you're old enough to operate motor vehicle, you're old enough for sex. Driving requires a great deal of maturity. One wrong move and you can kill yourself, your passenger, pedestrians, or other drivers. Hence, if the goverment deems a person mentally mature enough to drive a vehicle at age 16, you should be old enough at that age to also decide who you want to fuck.

                                              With your reasoning we should also let them drink, vote and go off to war at 16 too. Sixteen year olds are NOT known to be mature, look at the posts here on GFY if you don't believe me. Hell half the 18 year olds here are not mature enough to post on a message board and behave...let alone drink,drive and fuck.

                                                      For the record this isn't about whether or not young teens are mature enough or if they are going to have sex or not. Fact is they ARE. Period, whether some of you like it or not you're going to have to deal with it. The new law still allows for legal sex between young people within a certain age range of each other.

                                                      It's about protecting them from older perv assholes who prey on them or are in a position of authority over them who force them into sexual situations, and specifically internet predators.

                                                                  I would favor an international treaty to standardize the age of consent everywhere on the planet. Then there would be no excuse.. and no safe harbor for predators.

Almost everyone I know who got their license before the age of 18 has been in some sort of bad accident. I was a late-bloomer and didn't get my license until I was 19. Guess what? I've never been in an accident. Well, one that was my fault, anyway. Some idiot backed into me a few months ago.

                                                                                                                              The age of consent in a few states is 16, I believe. I use to live in Maine and the age of consent there was 16.

                                                                                                                              I agree with the "global age of consent" idea.

                                                                                                                                      Also, the whole "predator" and "pervert" thing never made sense to me... 16-17 year old girls can be smoking hot. It's better for a kid to get driving experience under the eye of their parents. If they raise it to 18, then there are millions of college age first time drivers out there that answer to nobody.

                                                                                                                                                      Another angle to this is insurance rates. If the insurance industry is going to lose all of their 16-17yo customers, those profits have to be made up elsewhere.

                                                                                                                                                          I thought it was always 16.. my exgf I met when she was 15, she lived at home with her mom, who beat her and was crazy as well as a drug dealer.. at 20 I was sneaking in and staying the night in her basement lol "just shows how brave and stupid I was", when she turned 16 she left and stayed at my place, weeks later her mom asked us to come over.. she just wanted to talk.. what a dumb fucking move that was.. going there.. next thing i know her mom is pulling my exgf hair and kicking her in the house and I ran to my place and called the cops and had all my friends and neighbours outside in less than a couple mins...

                                                                                                                                                          ANYWAYS... the cops went in and took my exgf out of there, her mom stoned at the time, got charged for beating my exgf, and she was yelling at the cops about her leaving with me and shes only 16 and the cops said shes 16 she can do whatever she wants.

I've met 16-year-old girls before who are way more mature than most 20-year-old girls.

                                                                                                                                                                          For example, years ago my good friend lived in the shittiest trailer park you'll ever see with his little 16-year-old sister and his mom who was suffering from paranoid sychophrenia. If you met his little sister, you'd never believe she was only 16-years-old. She had one hell of a life. Was beaten as a child, had a paranoid sychophrenic for a mom, and lived in the biggest shithole trailer you'll ever see. She was forced at an early age to get a job and take care of most of the responsibities around the "house."

                                                                                                                                                                          Meanwhile, I meet these spoiled little 20-year-old girls (and older) who live with mom and dad in gorgeous homes and have everything in life handed to them. They're about as immature as immature can get because, let's face it; they've never really had any life experience. Yet, they're still out getting the shit railed out of them.

                                                                                                                                                                          Many variables in how mature a person is. It's all dependant on what you've seen and done in life. I've met very mature 16-year-olds. I've met very immature 16-year-olds. I've met very mature 20-year-olds. I've met very immature 20-year-olds.

And, by the sounds of it, her life forced her to grow up quick. If you have a beautiful nine-year-old daughter out of the situation, I wouldn't regret anything if I were you.

Driving requires a great deal of maturity. One wrong move and you can kill yourself, your passenger, pedestrians, or other drivers. Hence, if the goverment deems a person mentally mature enough to drive a vehicle at age 16, you should be old enough at that age to also decide who you want to fuck.

                                                                                                                                                                                      Well then raise the age for a drivers license to 18. Which I think it should be anyways. the price in car insuranbce for the rest of us would drop considerably and keep a lot of bad drivers off the road.

There is no magic number for maturity level, it varies from person to person and depends on many factors including but not limited to his environment, parental-teachings, education, company of friends etc.

                                                                                                                                                                                              A 14 years old can be mature enough to decide whether he/she want to have sex, drink or not .. or understand how to drive safely .. while a 19 years old chick can be dumb enough to get pregnant in a one-night stand etc.

Yes it's 18 if the guys is more than 4 years older than the girl. As long as the guy is less than 4 years meaning 48 months then it's legal as long as she is 16. So for example a girl who is 16 and 3 months have sex with a guy who is 20 years and 3 months. If he's 20 and 4 months he goes to jail. So technically a 21 year old can have sex with an "underage" girl in my state under certain conditions.

                                                                                                                                                                                                      Also if the girl is married then it doesn't matter. If a 16 year old parents agree to let her marry a 30 year old then he can fuck her and it's legal once they're married.
