Economic Stimulus Checks - Should I Invest in Flatscreen TV companies??
With my stock portfolio taking a pretty hard hit over the last six months I am starting to look for some companies that may show a little profit in the short term and began thinking about the Economic Stimulus Checks that everyone will be receiving in the next three months and how they will be spent.
Sure it's nice to think that everyone will use the money wisely but for those that don't have to spend it on making ends meet and covering the soaring prices at the pump I thought to myself. What is the number one item that I think people will spend their money on and my thoughts went straight to the VISA cash cards that the U.S. government set to the Katrina victims. Instead of spending the money on necessities I think that flat screen TV's were the number one purchase this "FREE" money was used for. So as I see it this $600 per person Economic Stimulus check is "FREE" money and I can see it hanging on possible millions of walls in the very near future. ![]() Now I just need to decide which manufacturer will sell the most. What do you think? _

Could be a good idea.
I think it will be a very short term thing though. The sales of LCD and Plasma TVs are crazy right now. I can't imagine that it is going to last forever. Then again, all the big companies make DVD players, etc too so... I think you are on the right track for relatively safe investment. But I don't think it's really the field of dreams or anything like that. But then again what do I really know? This is purely speculation based on what I see.

I wouldn't. With the cost of food and everything else raising, the first thing to go (for the lower, then middle class) will be the frivolous things. The whole market will be digital, or digital-capable-via-converter-box by 2010, and then it's going to lull again, even if we don't crash by then.

I think the TVs that would do best are those cheaper LCDs from Wal-Mart. Non-name brand, maybe under the umbrella of a different company.

Since this is definitely something short term I think that I may look at one of the off brand manufacturers along with one of the more heavily branded ones. The majority of what I have are blue chip growth stocks that have performed well over the past 10 years and are being used for college expenses so I don't have 3-5 years for these to cycle back to the value they were previously at. I am looking to get in and out in about 6-12 months then see where the market is. _
