    Why can't blacks swim?

    A deeply puzzling event occurred again this year in the shark-infested Atlantic at Robben Island outside Cape Town. A courageous group of super-fit male and female swimmers again braved the icy, shark-infested water of Table Bay to swim the dangerous 7.5 kilometres from Mandela's former prison island to the Bloubergstrand beach to 'commemorate South African freedom day.'

    What makes the annual event so puzzling is not that it occurred -- but that not one black-African swimmer participated. The participants all sported magnificent tans -- but also were clearly members of the so hated 'previously advantaged race group' which South Africa's leadership most loves to hate.

    Surely on Freedom Day, at least one black-African swimmer could be found to also cross these shark-infested waters from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand to commemorate his freedom?

                                  As Eddie Murphy said "cause white people are stupid"... like in poltergeist when the ghost told the family to get out, they hung around. A black family would be like "well, nice place but I'm getting out of here"

                                              in all seriousness.. i've wondered this... it's not just a stereotype... in Marine bootcamp, all 9 of the black recruits failed swim qualifications, as did i'd say an avg of 85% of all the other platoons black guys...

                                              only ideas i could come up with is that many of them arent priveleged to grow up with a pool in their backyard? that's the only thing i could come up with... i thought their muscles could be denser, but at 19years old in bootcamp, theres not much fat on anyone there.. so what is it?

                                                      That place isn't just infested with any old sharks, it's also full of great whites.

                                                      Swimming with sharks is bad enough, but you'd have to put a gun to my head to swim in water where there were great whites around.

                                                          Like I said before...they just never learned. You don't need a pool in your backyard to learn ho to swim.

                                                              aren't ALL ocean waters shark infested? The odds of you getting eaten by a shark are incredibly small. Thinking about sharks in the water sure as hell doesn't scare me out of the water... now if I see a fin pop out I'm outta there!

                                                                              There's a HUGE difference between being able to swim in a pool or smaller lakes (which are within range of what like 90% of the population?) and the OCEAN. Up here I grew up near Lake Michigan which has its fair share of strong currents and can be hard to swim in but when I got older and started taking trips to the ocean I quickly found out I wasn't as good of a swimmer as I thought.

                                                                              its HARD swimming in the ocean. Sure near the beach isn't that hard but go out a ways and you'll get your ass kicked!

                                                                                      South Africa has a large population of some of the largest great whites in the world. If I was going to take my chance in the ocean it wouldn't be off the coast of South Africa.

                                                                                              Carbon is not the problem, it makes up 0.041% of our atmosphere , 95% of that is from Volcanos and decomposing plants and stuff. So people in the US are responsible for 13% of the carbon in the atmosphere which 95% is not from Humans, like cars and trucks and stuff and they want to spend trillions to fix it while Solar Panel plants are powered by coal plants

                                                                                                  NEW YORK (AP) - Nearly 60 percent of African-American children can't swim, almost twice the figure for white children, according to a first-of-its-kind survey which USA Swimming hopes will strengthen its efforts to lower minority drowning rates and draw more blacks into the sport.

                                                                                                  Stark statistics underlie the initiative by the national governing body for swimming. Black children drown at a rate almost three times the overall rate. And less than 2 percent of USA Swimming's nearly 252,000 members who swim competitively year-round are black.



                                                                                                  The minority swimming gap has deep roots in America's racial history. For decades during the 20th century, many pools were segregated, and relatively few were built to serve black communities.

                                                                                                  John Cruzat, USA Swimming's diversity specialist, said these inequalities were compounded by a widespread misperception?fueled by flawed academic studies?that blacks' swimming ability was compromised by an innate deficit of buoyancy.

                                                                                                  "There are people who still give credence to these stereotypes, even in the black and Hispanic community," said Cruzat, who wants to break the cycle that passes negative attitudes about swimming from one black generation to another.

                                                                                                  "These long-held beliefs are still so potent," he said. "If you don't teach your children to swim, you're putting your grandchildren at risk."

                                                                                                  Cruzat was pleased by one finding in the new study?that most black and Hispanic children do not disdain swimming as a "white sport." The study also found that swimming ability, regardless of race, increased in relation to parents' income and education.
