Google maps = Invasion of privacy! This is fucked up!

Have you ever tried to locate your house on google maps and zoom in on it? I can almost see the license plate of my car parked by my house, see swimming pool with people. What the fuck is that? How is that not invasion of privacy? I can only imagine how many fucking weirdos surf those nowadays. How long before they get sued????

It's legal because it's already viewable in public. It isn't as if they are mapping out the interiors of homes. Nothing is shown that can't be seen with the naked eye.

On a more serious note... I can barely make out my own house while zoomed in all the way. It's hardly invasion of privacy. I mean, if they had street view on a residential street where inside homes and yards were visible then maybe it would be an issue then.

Yep, being sued over "street view". They claim that "all you need to do is complain" (paraphrasing), and they'll remove it.

I simply call it the "youtube defense" and I truly wonder how long it'll last the way it is now.

I discussed this on another site where people were disputing whether or not a person could transcribe a piece of music, by ear, and then provide it on a website as either sheet music, or guitar tablature. I proposed that they simply use the 'youtube' process by which if someone submits something that another someone claims is copyrighted, just remove it. Where else does one look on the internet for a standard if not google?

Also, maps.live.com is pretty nifty too with their "birdseye" views. I think you have to use IE to use it though.

Some of the pictures feature people who can clearly be identified, which contravenes Canadian legislation on privacy.

"We are thinking about launching it outside the United States, including Canada, and we're looking at how it would have to be different in Canada compared to its U.S. version," said Peter Fleischer, Google's global privacy counsel.
