More felons allowed to enlist into the Military

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080421/...ilitary_felons

And when they are out of criminals who want to enlist, is the draft far behind?

As long as it puts off a draft for the time being I am all for felons fighting in the war. Maybe Bush should do what Stalin did during WW2, tell prisoners if they fight in the war they will bet set free but send their asses back to prison when the war is over. Stalin was an asshole, hahahaha.

Geeze, spend 5 minutes and actually read the article. I certainly have no problems with the enlistees they are talking about getting waivers to serve.

Im up for them starting a draft. Though I would imagine that they would allow illegals to enlist for citizenship status when done. Wait that sounds like a bad sci fi movie.

I didn't say I had a problem with it, I'm saying that they are really hurting for troops.

All men and women should be allowed to serve if they choose. Criminals can kill just as easy as non-criminals do, no need to discriminate.

Again, if you actually READ the article, it sure as hell doesn't look like they are "hurting for troops". When they start offering the "jail or military" option that they did decades ago, THEN start worrying. Letting someone in because they had sex with their girlfriend when they were a teen is hardly opening up the floodgates for hard core felons to start filling the ranks.

It will be interesting to see how many of those felons repeat offened while in the service? Some people need a second chance in life and sometimes the Marines are successful at giving them that chance. But not always.

The critics say its a form of racism.. I see it as the opposite.

If I saw a Mexican dude who I knew fought for this Country to live in I would honor him. Look up to him. It would be an honor. People wouldnt be looking down on the minorities as much. You couldnt. Because they fought to have a family here.

Honorable.

My Grandfather did it in WWII.

Exactly. As soon as the draft becomes more of a realistic issue, people will start taking this war more seriously.

Until then American Idol is more important for middle and upper class America to follow.

Until the Sons of America's Households are drafted out to war people really and honestly dont give shit. ITs tea time talk. Draft away our sons and its Riot time like the Vietnam Era. People will rage.

Maybe its needed. Just to get America to WAKE THE FUCK UP.

I think you misunderstood his point (and assuming I *did* understand it), that they are loosening restrictions on enlisting because the U.S. is getting desperate to recruit more troops - it's not *who* they are letting in, just the fact that they are making it easer.

It's no secret there has been a shortfall of recruits for years and clearly they are trying new ways to get people to enlist. Loosening restrictions is just one of many tactics.

(Of course, the bad publicity over the "Stop-Less" idea doesn't help their case much)

However, we did also let convicts serve in lieu of prison; and pretty sure we traded green cards for service, if memory serves.

Dude, READ THE ARTICLE. These are petty things. Hell, there are kids not getting in because of bunions, asthma, if they've been on any treatment for ADD in the last 12 months, homeschooled, etc.

Quote:
Waivers must be approved by an officer who is ranked as a brigadier general or above, and recruits must have written recommendations and endorsements from community leaders showing they would be a good bet for the military.
Does that really sound like they're just letting in the scum of the earth because they're desperate or some movie came out?

The restrictions for the military have been INCREDIBLY tight for years and they are loosening them up a teeny tiny bit. It's still 100X harder to get in than it was even just 30 years ago.

I think the Military should offer service for time as a standard much more so than what is happening right now.

And Immigrants of course I wouldnt mind that one bit.

Fact is the USA needs way more soldiers than present.

they should make some kind of law when you run out of cannon fodder you dont select from the bottom to top but from the top to bottom. That way the president would be the first to be on the front line, a guarantee he would be ending the war within seconds

They will not start a draft because then people will become very aware and they dont want that. It's easy to say stay in Iraq fight forever but when its their son or daughter being shipped off because they were drafted. Then the tune will change radically they dont want that.

During the Second World War...even with the draft they still intoduced waviers...the same during the Korean conflict and the Vietnam conflict. When the military needs warm bodies they relax requirements...there is nothing new about this.

I don't see what the big deal is. Those guys, convicted felons or not, have to find work somewhere, and probably being in the Army will keep them from straying again.

It is because they are hurting for troops. It's not a secret that military enlistment is at an all time low.

While in theory I agree with you, the sad fact of the matter is they american people won't have a choice. They always do what they are told, even if they disagree. They may protest, but it's not going to change anything.

If you or I had a child that was drafted, honestly what would we do about it? Personal income taxes are not fair either and outside of getting creative about our write-offs or business structure, not a damn thing we can do about it.

I'm not saying there will be a draft, I'm only commenting that if there was, we'd do nothing about it but bitch and moan.

Once again, you are clueless.

I can assure you that if there was a draft you would see change. Just look back 35 years.
