photo shop experts...

everyone that uses adobe photo shop is familiar with the gradient tool. how can i apply the gradient qualities to a whole layer. so as to say if i have two pic both on seperate layers but i want the top pic to fade away. how can i achieve this?

If i understand your question correctly, i think what you might want to try is apply the gradient as the layers mask.

select the top layer, hold control and click it, now that layer is selected, use the gradient to fade it away.
