There are many packages you can use.
Mac?s have Final Cut Pro which I actually found very nice to use although it is a pain if you have to move it from Mac to PC. I think one is best off to use Adobe Products. Adobe Premiere together with Adobe After Effects seem to work nicely. |

I've seen Final Cut pro in action. And I currently use Vegas Video. I wouldn't want to even try Final Cut Pro. In the reviews I've read they say Vegas is in some ways better than Final Cut Pro.

I agree Final cut pro is excellent software but maybe a little tougher to use if you haven't edited before. Cinestream is a bit easier to use and has a ton of features.
http://www.discreet.com/products/cinestream/ this is the mac link they still sell a pc version. quiet : is right for compression you really can't beat cleaner http://www.discreet.com/products/cleaner/cleaner51/ Just my ![]() |

Studio 7 (Pinnacle) hands down. Adobe Premiere blew up on me under the strain of large projects with 75 scenes and transitiions.
Studio is also simple enough for an idiot to use, but has all the important features. Avoid Studio 8 for now though, its an unstable piece of shit but should be great in about 9 months... S.T. |

The thing is so slick, though, that I keep going back to it. I put it on another computer where I could copy over projects and play with it, and the betas coming out in their tech support forum are getting marginally better. The sexiest feature is the inline DVD authoring. Unfortunately like everything else that is broken too. Pinnacle has a long history of throwing useless software over the wall, and letting the users debug it. No need to have any expensive testing or quality control that way. It worked like a charm for them with 7, and I am betting 8 will be nice and solid soon too. The tech support forum is funnier than GFY; people are so pissed off at the endless file corruption and crashes they are flaming the techs there. S.T. |

Has no one here ever heard of Avid???
Avid Xpress is quite excellent for a PC platform. How serious are you needing to get? Basically Avid's stuff is industry standard... most of what you see on TV or in movies goes through some Avid work at some point. Most "high end" stuff like that isn't being done on a PC platform though.

If you're looking for a PC equivalent of Final Cut Pro, I would suggest Matrox RT-X100. Great software that takes advantage your P4 power. It includes Adobe Premiere 6.X and a copy of DVDit by Sonic. Will run about $1000. Also, if you're more familiar with Pinnacle products, you can give Pinnacle Pro One a try (about $899). But it lacks color correction tools for your vids. But honestly, if you're just compressing MPEGs and WMVs, a copy of Pinnacle Studio DV 7 would do just fine. Now if color correction and DVD authoring is crucial for your projects, well then you can look into getting higher end products. just my 2 cents. |

I use MGI Video Wave and Virtual Dub. Honestly, Video Wave is needed only because the Dub is unable extract a sound from DV format. If it could, I would use only it. Though it's a bit inconvenient but very poverful and free.
