Ford, GM & Toyota Report Double Digit Sales Declines!

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. on Tuesday all handed in double-digit percentage declines in March U.S. sales, capping a first quarter in which the industry struggled through a brutal sales environment.

This isn't about gas prices, it's about a bad overall economy.

The unemployment rate is high, people are afraid they might lose their jobs, many investments are down or shaky, people are afraid of recession, people's homes have lost value - all these things combined cause people to put off major purchases.

Ironically, though, a lack of major purchases will lead to lay-offs, which will raise unemployment even further and bring consumer confidence even further down.

Bad times ahead
