Blu-ray copy protection 'cracked'

A company claims it has cracked the anti-piracy technology on Blu-ray discs.
Slysoft says the new version of its AnyDVD programme allows users to make "backup security copies" of high definition movies.

The claim is a blow to Sony which developed the Blu-ray format.

The discs are protected by an anti-piracy system called BD+.

When it launched in 2007, developers boasted it would not be cracked for 10 years.

Sony declined to comment.

SlySoft says it hacked the BD+ technology in November.

It decided to wait for the result of the "format war" between Blu-ray and HD DVD before releasing a full product.

BD+ is designed to react to attempts on its technology.

Its developers say they can re-lock copied discs, making them unusable in the future.

SlySoft reckons it is prepared for this.

Peer van Heuen from the company said: "The worst-case scenario is our boss locks us up with only bread and water in the company dungeon for three months until we are successful again."

Even with a 16 Mbps connection a blu-ray rip would take at least 3.5 hours. How many have that? Not many in the US that's for sure. I highly doubt that people are using their 2 Mbps connection for 30 hours straight to download a blu-ray rip.

it wasn't that many moons ago that people would wait overnight and into the next day to download a music cd...

It's not 'alledged' the software is for sale on their site, and has been for a couple of weeks.

Thing is, who gives a shit? The blank media costs more than the films at the moment!

I can get speeds of up to 1.8 megs a second on a well seeded torrent. That isnt gonna take 3.5 hours to grab a 8.5gig (or smaller) file. You're looking at 2 hours max. Who wouldnt wait 2 hours to save 30 bucks plus the gas it takes to drive to the store and buy it?

You can get them for like 8-10 dollars a pop if you shop around. The real issue is that the burners are pretty expensive still. However, that will change.

The last DVD I bought was from a TV series... that I saw on TV.. for free. Haven't seen a movie that compelled me to even pay for NetFlix to watch a year later. If I want it, I'll buy it, but, man, that hasn't happened for a long time.

I agree. I think you should only own a movie that you really really enjoy and will watch multiple times. If that's not the case, then Blockbuster or Netflix is the way to go.

Yeah like um 3 years ago. Hell Sony sells DRM free music now. By the way Sony is only part of the blu-ray consortium. Ironic those bashing blu-ray because of Sony's connection LOVE Apple which is also part of the same consortium. Hmmmmmm. Where is the "Fuck Apple" posts?

YOU can. 1/3 of American have no internt. 1/6 have dial-up. Of the 50% that do have "broadband 50% of those have 2 Mbps or less. At 2 Mbps one can only download 256 KB of data per second. Less than 10% of those that have broadband actually have 10 Mbps connection or higher.
