I had light cars all my life and got a black one and I think the birds seek it out to shit on it. Do you have the same prob?

I have a black car. It seems to attract keys more than birds. Fucking savages in this town, I swear.

The extra heat always bugged me as well.

I've owned all white cars, with the exception of one black Mazda. The black car of course was always dirty, always had bird shit, (especially within minutes/hours of car wash), and was always much hotter during the summer.

I only buy black cars. Yes, they indeed are a pin in the rump to keep clean. Any bit of pollen, or dust will require you to wash or rinse at least.

What i do, is if the car is basically clean and the pollen count is high, I go outside and blast the car with a hose. Then I use a chamois and dry it and looks good as new. Saves you from washing the whole thing.

Bird shit? lol, yup ya see it more on a black car than a white. I wonder why that is?

can't go wrong with a black car + tinted windows... looks real sharp... as long as you have time to wash it every other day

Hate it, hate it, hate it. First and last black car EVER. The only reason I got it was because it was the only one on the lot wit the options I wanted and I've always said I didn't care about color. I was wrong.

Actually... black, by definition, absorbs all light... and reflects none. The same physics are involved in reasoning why black gets hotter... because whatever light energy gets past the protective coats is getting absorbed into the body of the car, heating it up.

It might seem more reflective, however, because the light reflected by the gloss-coat doesn't have any other ambient light to compete with.

It's probably also why it appears to get dirty easier... the eye's quick to pick out those specks that do reflect light toward it in a backdrop void of light.

Personally, I've opted for tan, silver, red, and white vehicles so far in life... much easier to maintain when compared to black.

So it's your theory that the color black reflects more white than the color white? You might want to rethink that one.

Mine is dark blue and almost as bad. So glad it's not black, though.

There's a 350Z down the street that a guy parks outside but covers it with a car cover at night. What's weird is that it's SPOTLESS all the time. No swirls from rough washing, no pollen, no nothing. But we know he drives it every day. He must be completely OCD or coated that thing with something magical.

I highly doubt birds target cars of a specific color.

Personally, I have owned white cars and I have owned black cars. I will stick with the black.

I had a black car with a gawd damn tinted t-top to add to it. Then when I moved here and I experienced the summer heat which can and does go between 110-120 degree's F. Never ever ever fucking again. I know mythbusters did some show about exploding soda cans in a car. I knew they were off a bit just because I know damn well that one day on way back from some errands I swore I heard gun shots and felt warm liquid hitting me. Thought I was actually shot for a second until I realized that several cans of soda in a case where V shaped at the top and some others had actually popped open. There was no plastic covering. Anyways I was never able to get the soda splatter completely out of the car either. Plus I got like burnt real bad a few times when my leg would hit the chrome strip around the bottom or the door or my hand would touch the non covered portion of the chrome hand controls. Oh and it eventually started to oxidize the paint pretty quick with the heat.

I have a black car and a white car sitting side by side. The black car gets washed 10X more than the white car. The white car always looks cleaner

Every single little scratch and ding shows.

I HATE MY BLACK CAR!!

Black cars always look dirty faster, dust on them is very visible, make imperfections and dents easier to see. Need to keep them really clean all the time, where as white cars can get pretty dirty before it's really noticeable.

My friend had a black car and was totally anal too, he would cover it, and he also would wash it down with just a wet rag (no soap) every night, just to get the dust off. I had a dirt driveway at one of my houses and he would never drive down it, always park at the end and walk.

I had an M3 that was my first black car.. It was terrible to keep looking great. I told myself I'll NEVER get another black car. And I had no desire to get a Mercedes until I was old(er)
About a year ago,I stopped by the dealership and the guys there all know me.
They had this brand new E55amg sitting there in the parking lot and my dealer suggested I take it for a ride.

To make a long story short,I bought it on the spot so now I'm driving a black old mans car. I promised everyone that I wouldn't ever bitch again about trying to keep it clean..

I used to have a black car. It's now a washed-out gray on top and still black on the sides. The hot California sun baked the hell out of it.
Yeah I know... it needs a paint job by now, but I will NOT go black again. It's a total bitch to keep clean.

Solution; keep it in a garage. Solves both the heat absorption and the birdshit problems.

Personally I've always believed that black and white were the two absolute WORST colors for cars. Both look horrible when the least bit of dirt gets on them. White I'm just not fond of at all anyway, and black has that heat absorption issue.

I'll never buy either color of vehicle.

My present ride is dark metalic green, and I love it.

That's a great idea! I wish I had thought of that earlier. Looking back, I now realize that I should have brought my garage to work with me every day. Instead, I stupidly drove my car to the office and parked it in the lot where there was no shade for 10 hours a day. And to think... the perfect solution was right there in front of me the whole time!

We have a smartass in the house.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but some cities actually have indoor parking garages. You can actually drive into them, and park, and pay as you leave.

Some of them (as in all) even let you pay by the month. :D

Of course I work from home, and I was probably thinking that a lot of people here do likewise. I may have assumed too much with that one though. If that's true then... oops.

There's a thought - just don't drive it anywhere! Why didn't I think of that?? *slapping head*

Me? A smartass??? How dare you!

Actually, I'm lucky enough to work from home now, but I wasn't when I first moved to California. And unfortunately, I didn't work in the city, so no parking garages. Would have been nice though... would have saved me from having to get a new paint job. Temperatures that reach over 100 on a regular basis are never friendly to cars, no matter the color.

I make one comment and the smartasses come out of the damn woodwork left and right. *slaps head*

No, not "don't drive it anywhere".... don't PARK it anywhere. Drive it all you want, just keep it in the garage.

What I should have said was, the solution is just don't buy a black car. If you have one, sell it. Everyone I've known who has owned one now says they're the devil incarnate.

But I'm a solution guy, so I've been thinking in those terms in the last few minutes and have come up with a few more ideas...

What about those dashboard protector things? Made out of cardboard, you spread it across the inside of your windshield and it prevents the sun from melting your dashboard. Also, there's a little gadget out now that you can put in your side window and it has a fan in it that sucks the heat from the interior and blows it out, thus keeping your car cooler while it sits in the sun and bakes.

Then there is always the car cover. Get a white one, pull it over your car every time you park it somewhere. :D
