12 hour downtime with Dreamhost

That's the last time. A planned outage and they didn't even send out an email to notify. Is that typical of all hosts?

My question is:
A-Does Dreamhost really suck by being down for maint. for 12 hours?

B-Who's better for the same price?

I suggest Phatservers I never had any downtime with them. That sucks having a 12 hour downtime especially if your site is high in traffic. Every minute counts when it comes to making sales.

I have my sites hosted with Phat Servers why don't you?

i was also down on dreamhost but i do remember recieving an email about 3 weeks ago about server migration or database whotnot!

Have a few sites on DH and gee I was down for about 5 minutes today. 5+ TBytes of data transfer a month for just over $100 for the year. Status page reported the problems and outlined the issues. WTF do you want for that kind of money?? Have no complaints with DH.

If I grow a site to where I can't afford to have it down or need technical support for it, then I move it to dedicated hosting that cost a lot more.

I remember threads on gfy bitching about dedicated services being down on a well known hosting company that cost a lot more... They were down for as long or longer.

Not all boxes were affected at DH. You want to be sure your sites stay up? Use mirrored servers.

Im with www.exmasters.com and more then happy! I started with a virtual plan but it coudnt take the load of my site, so they switched me to a managed dedicated for free. The dedicated also coudnt handle it so they set up another pair of 2GB Ram for free!
I have their support and ownership in icq and if something goes wrong they fix it within minutes! Thats hosting

But people had problems with it too. Its always best to get some quality hosting or dedicated server. I recommend http://dwhs.net

I've heard a lot of bad things about them. Can't speak from personal experience though.

I had my ISP down once or twice now and it's funny when I call and they say that they scheduled maintenance at 12 midnight so that it won't inconvenience people. HA! When do you think I get most of my work done?

I laugh every time i see a reply about "TOP NOTCH SUPPORT!!!" - who cares about their support, if the server is never down, you'll never really need support - I think i've sent in maybe a dozen tickets over the last year or so on my host, for stuff I just don't have access to do - and not time critical... but in terms of downtime? Non existent... seriously, however I am paying well.. alot more than $6.95 a month.

I know of someone using near the 5TB and claims all is working fine.... Also I'm using MySql. Maybe it's just luck?

I'm sure it is a bit the luck of the draw on who you share the server with. They specialize in virtual accounts or shared servers. Just think for the bucks, it's a deal. So if things went south, I'd just move the sites. I would bitch considering the prices. A good place to put new sites you're developing.... Obviously you're not gonna put a pay site there.
