SEO links from .edu domains

Are they still weighted heavier in the SE's algos than normal TLD sites?

Looks like google has been dropping a bunch of these lately, at least for terms I'm targeting.

I would still think that a few links from PR6-8 pages should do good.

I wouldn't do that.
Not to mention, I am not talking about some random script exploits / comment/blog spam. I am talking about legitimate links.

DjiXas i think you missed the point. There was lot's of spammers in yahoo/google from hacked student account pages (on .edu) domains, and they were ranked really well with high competetive keywords. Only recently google started to drop them one by one, so i think they lowered the importance of .edu tdl

Hi,

No, I got it. I'm just saying that TDL doesn't matter as long as it's not country related. All are the same. If you would register one .com, one .info and one .edu at same time, they would be equal and rank the same.

Totally right, google stopped giving any additional value to links from .edu sites many months ago. This doesn't mean a link from an authority site is useless, but getting links on orphan .edu pages doesn't really help any more.

<<<<<orphan .edu pages doesn't really help any more.

Exactly right........ Lets take an example. I pay some kid beer money for a page on his school hosting account. The page has no inbound links except from a directory of student sites. The url looks like this....

someschool.edu/~student

A link from that page is pretty much useless now. Used to be golden though. I had a whole network of these set up at one point and was not just using them for inbound links but was also setting up pages on the and using them to rank. (not adult)... Was like shooting fish in a barrel. I just advertised this little page around college related sites....

http://www.college-domains.info/

Now does this mean that a link from other types of .edu domains dont have mad juice? You can get some serious love from link from the right type of page.... If the linking page is well linked, especially from other .edu pages and is not buried away from the root it can have alot of power.

It would get exactly the same power, if that .edu TDL would be replaced with .INFO and all backlinks would remain. The only reason why .edu "got power", is because other authority sites links to them. If those authority sites would link to .info or any other, it would hav exactly the same effect.

There's no power in .edu

Thats just not factual....... even a cursory look at some of the most spammed out areas of the web prove this.

That is so two years ago when .edu was popular. Student pages and message boards were hacked.
