Rick Rolled to child porn = you're a pedophile, says FBI

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post...-says-fbi.html

Quote:
Everyone has had it happen to them: a "friend" sends you a link in IM or over IRC that purports to be something like a cat in an awkward position with a hilarious caption. Soon, however, you discover that the link wasn't to a lolcat at all; instead, you've been Rick Rolled—or even worse, sent to 2girls1cup (find it on your own, but be warned: it may scar you for life). These pranks are commonplace now, but be careful of what you click on and from whom. If that link points to anything even pretending to be child porn, that's enough evidence for the FBI of intent to download it. The authorities could then raid your home and possibly throw you in jail.

Such is the case with Temple University doctoral student Roderick Vosburgh, who apparently clicked on an FBI-planted hyperlink somewhere on the Internet. Instead, the link pointed to a file on an FBI server that contained no porn, but logged the IPs of everyone attempting to access it. Vosburgh's IP was one of those, and the FBI came knockin' on his door early one morning, arrested him, and searched his home.

In fact, this didn't just happen to Vosburgh—the FBI has been using this click-and-be-owned tactic for a few years now, using logged IP addresses as ways to get warrants and charge people with intent to download child porn (a federal crime). The FBI has been linking to these bogus files on message boards that are known to attract child predators, but even the log files don't take into account the referrer—any IP address that shows up is automatically assumed to be guilty. This means that if your drunk friends think it's funny to IM you a link to something that turns out to be to the FBI's covert file, you could be in trouble.

So is the FBI placing real CP on the net in order to catch people or are they planting fake files?

the FBI is planting fake files with links that show that the end user was intending to find child porn

so, they basically put up a dummy file that says "little girl in panties" and put a dummy file behind it, if you click that link, you go to jail

Not to protect CP, but I could think of a bunch of reasons as to why that shouldn't hold up in the court room. I'm sure there has to be more to the story than just click a link go to jail. Might give them enough reason for a warrant to search for more evidence through.

Same here, recently there was operation called "sledgehammer" where they busted a lot of pedos using same method. It was funny to hear defense on court of one person, which said how he looked on search engine for musician paul young and then he founded cp sites beacuse of keyword young.Yeah right.

I would venture to guess they are placing those links VERY carefully

I have spoken at length with someone I know who is a Fed working in the department that goes after pedos.

He's told me that they can always tell who the real pedos are, by showing an established pattern of seeking out the stuff.

Content in someone's browser cache, for instance won't get them into trouble unless it matches with their surfing habits.

They know about pop-up traps that lead surfers to bad sites, and that people have gotten horrible shit emailed unwanted to them.

Maybe this guy who got into trouble shouldn't have clicked a link that said it led to a 4 year old having anal sex and then trying to destroy some of his storage...

When you read the second story it is apparent that the first story leaves a lot of shit out.

Like the guy destroyed his hard drive and flash drive when the agents were outside his home. Anyone not guilty would never have even thought about doing this. They would have never assumed, "Ohh... These guys are here because of that link I clicked on in an Email that didn't say CP and gave me a file without CP in it."

He knew why they were there. Because he did have CP on the computer.

I think that the FBI is doing a good job this time (not like the last sting where half the people arrested were victims of credit card theft!).

But look:
-They are posting the links on forums where there is already CP
-They are posting the "videos" as multiple parts, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, etc and putting these on different URLs
-Then they are going after people who are downloading all of these parts - look at the subpoena
-So it's unlikely that somebody will download all of these separate clips accidentally.

I understand what they're doing but I think it should only be grounds for a search - not for charges. If someone clicks those links then they've opened themselves up to be searched, but the charges should come based on whats found in the search and NOT for attempting to download this or that, some people really suck with computers and will literally do anything they're told by someone they think they can trust.

Too many people would use that excuse if not. Makes sense to me. They should hash it out in court. After looking at a log of his activities that seem to indicate he is telling the truth they should let him go.

I don't have any CP on my computer and never have. I do have a SHITLOAD of regular porn on it. If the auhtorities ever came to bust me who knows if they try to bust me for having "obscene" materials on it. Just to make themselves look good. Think about all the shit on your computer and think if you'd want everyone to know in detail what is on it? And god forbid you have any "teen porn" on it even though the grils are over 18 and not betrayed as underage. The cops will make sure to let the news know they caught you with "kiddie" porn. It doesn't matter if the charges are droped later, the damage to your reputation is done.

As I mentioned already, FBI did a brilliant job for all the blackmailers. Wanna put your american boss, cheating wife/husband or other foe into the jail? That's fuckin' easy! Just sent him/her a magic link and watch the news But "unfortunately" right now this kind of blackmailing will work on the US citizens only.

Sure after everyone in your town knows you got arrested for supposedly having CP you think the cops dropping the charges will make everything ok?

Very strange way to assume some one guilty. For example, if I'd have some private pictures of my wife on HDD which had to be "investigated" by some one, I'd destroy it without any doubts. Believe me, there are many other things besides cp that people just don't wanna show anyone.
