Lost Subways, Underground Rivers, Rooms of Skulls and more [pics]

Been a while since we had a photo thread.
Been busy, but still snapping photos. Here goes.

#1 - Bone rooms

In France, when you're buried, your plot is only for 50 years. If your family [because obviously you can't ;)] doesn't renew it, you're dug up, and [literally] tossed under the cemetary in the tunnels below. This still happens today - there are some really grim cemetaries with bodies + hair and clothes chilling underground. Try not to get caught, "grave robbing" is a very real offense...

#2 - Toronto .. huuh?

40m under a frozen toronto lies an equally frozen and ridiculously complicated network of tunnels. Fashioned over the entire length of downtown, each tunnel runs for kilometers, with dead stops at both ends, but another tunnel running perpendicular to it, above. Some are finished, others are still being made - there are mini trains for moving things around, and massssive 15 - 20m tall icicles that crash down randomly to try to kill you as you cross the frozen bridge over the underground mud river... very indiana jones.

#3 - Canal Saint Martin, Paris
Just some pano shots of this amazing underground canal.

#4 - Paris Metro, line 13

#5 - Abandoned Metro, Paris ??
Lovely abandoned metro

the station is abandoned, but to one end there are very active offices - but if you can sneak in, it's worth it for what they contain.. 12AM tonight I snuck up, checked under and over the door to make sure there was noone, popped open the door, and a very startled woman walked out of the office to have a cigarette. She asked me [in french, bear in mind] what the fuck was I doing.
I said: no problems - I'm australian, and read in my tour book that there was this station here. It's amazing, isn't it?

In fact, on the wall of the station here are two murals / ancient adverts from the 1930's - which still exist in perfect condition, unlike the rest of the station.

The lady was rather puzzled, and then finally asked me if I'd like to wash my face, as I was covered in soot. I did, thanked her, and walked out of the office :D

Hurrah for france.
With some secret surprises:

9 times out of 10 I shoot on Av mode, to get a feel for what the lighting of the place is like, and then dive into manual to tweak it as I want.

Sunset photos are generally straightfoward, as the sky light starts to balance w/ the ambient light. Take a tripod, or nudge up the ISO on your camera, and snap away.. I normally shoot w/ what's there, or will pop off some flashes. Mainly, it's just practice and guess work

RE: What's to come? Not sure. I'm hoping to go to russia and around this year. Perhaps a trip to southern europe.. depends on the workload.

In the meantime, definitely want to shoot some more metro stuff...

thanks for the comments all :D

Closed just before 1940, due to the war, and then never reopened, mainly due to its proximity to another metro station that got more service

hey simon, I posted your chilling underground boneyard photos on another board after you showed me them and explained about the 50 year thing you told me about with French cemeteries - everybody on that board said that was bullshit and those are pics of The Catacombs which date back to the 1700's.

i've been meaning to hit you up and ask you about it.

Wonderful pics dude, do u have any site where i could see some more of ur shoots or should i search ur threads?

BTW, in Buenos Aires, we had the first subway of southamerica, hispanic america and south hemispher as its stated in wikipedia (ES), here i link you the EN version in case you are interested in reading a little bit about it.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_A_%28Buenos_Aires%29

If you check the ES version you will find some few more pics, and there are even avandoned stations, another miscelanea info is that in the 80's some parts of this subway were used to film Highlander III (or II, dont remember well)

Cheers

ps: i cant link to wikipedia as i have less than 30 post, so just copy paste it in your browser, sorry.
