I did not trim the tree with the explicit intent of making them homeless. Figured it would be icing on the cake.

See now they are making YOUR home a living hell. You can not kill them you made this mess, they have a right to live. Really the best thing to do was to leave them alone in the first place, but now they are your responsibility because you made this mess and when you made them homeless they moved in next door (your house)

How about this find a better place for them to chill, close by. Like another similar tree, or a old log something they can LIVE in cuzz you did make them homeless. Put some food over their for a few days/week and I bet they will gladly move to their new improved home, and not bother you or haunt your dreams. :)

I live by the beach. City stuff. Any tree huggers would be weekend warrior types and there certainly are no "woods" to release them in around here.

The fact that I have to deal with varmints sucks, but I have squirrels, coons, possums and skunks to deal with around here.

If you cut a hole in a log like 2 inches in diameter and a few inches deep then hammer nails at a downward angle toward the hole so the points stick out a little ways and then put some kind of shiny object in there the racoon will reach its hand in to grab the shiny object but when it tries to pull its hand out it will be stabbed by the nails making it so it can't get its hand out.

If you made it right it wont be able to get away and will eventually die of starvation/carnivorous wild animal.

I think that's how they caught racoons in the book "Where the red fern grows"

when I had that problem I shot them with paintballs...Never returned again and didnt hurt them, just turned them pretty colors :)

You *might* be able to get rid of them by using some Lion urine or similar. Maybe bear. Something big and predatory that they could conceivably be aware of instinctively in your area. They should sell it in a hunting department, and you could scent mark your property with it, making "meal sized" varmints hit the road.

Lotsa critters can't stand moth balls. Smash em into powder and sprinkle around where you want to keep them out. I've seen gardening shows where they suggest that to keep rabbits and snakes and such out of your vegetables. No idea if raccoons would react.. they're smart as hell and have hands and burglars masks after all.

last night we had a raccoon in our backyard. We were looking at him through a large picture window and he was clearly not phased by us at all. Only 5 - 10 feet away and a flashlight shining on him, he went about his business. He must have hung out for 20 minutes or more.

When we start getting lions and/or bears around here the raccoons can have the place.

I would give a pellet gun a try, if you have one. Doesn't make too much noise, and the majority of them aren't powerful enough to kill a raccoon.

Just sneak out at night and spotlight up the tree. You'll see their beady little eyes staring back at you. As long as they don't have a deep hollow to hide in, they will probably make a run for it once you shoot them. (if they do have a good hiding spot, then this isn't going to work)

Try scaring them off. Set off some fireworks or go buy a pellet gun. If you shot them with a pellet gun they will get the hint. And a pellet gun will not kill them, ok it might if you shot 'em in the head.

hehe, I realise not many people have lions or bears in their areas, but the critters will still instinctively react to a large predators urine. That is why they sell such things so hunters can herd deer and such towards their tree stand.
