New HD camera For 2008 - XDCAM EX-1 HD

God love my clients ...

Got delivery of two new cameras last month .. A couple of twin EX-1s ... XDCAM HD .. damn if you haven t read about these cameras yet, do yourself a favour and check em out! ...

All be it it's a little over kill for web. But I shoot to maximise content for my client base .. and most of my clients are also DVD and Broadcast based. So for this particular client (for whom I shoot gonzo and Pro Adult DVDs) this is the right camera! ... Awesome Picture that compares it self to it's bigger brother the F355.
1080 to 720 switchable ... Multi format with S & S record (memory card) the 16 gig cards can hold upto 100 min od the highest quality HD footage @ an effective pixel count of 1920 x 1080, which produce images in full HD resolution and realizes 800Mbps high-speed data transfer.

So cool new sony features include: The Rec Review can be set to 3 seconds, 10 seconds and clip .. a great tool to have when shooting. A great new addition (though I still don't how to use it for porn) is the “Slow & Quick Motion” capability. Real 1080 24p recording to allow for an awesome 35mm transfer (something I'm hoping to do in the next year on a feature adult production)

All in all, one great camera. Puts the HVX200 to shame .. LOL

The only draw back as of late is the editing platform. Though FCPHD has the XD codecs, I've been reading about lots of errors and problems with apple vs sony XD. Since I'm a PC person rather then a mac (though I do edit on mac on occasion) I was hoping that the Matrox RTX2 would do the job .. looks like right now it can't however Cineform promises an XD codecs for Adobe CS3 in the very near future. Right now, the only pc edit platform available for the EX-1 is the Matrox Axio .. and awesome edit suite that I would love to own, but just a little too pricey .. so My fingers are crossed for the RTCX2 to iether do an upfgrade to they're firmware or Cineforms new ex1 codecs.

Discuss ...

Looking at this one to see if it's capture is any different than the pan..... looks to be similar... can't tell if it's a 1080p capture or not

The pan scans at 1080p and then converts to 1080i/60 or 1080/24p... kind of confusing.. I just know it starts out at 1080p.... which means more source information.

The sony is stating 50min of HD capture on a 16GB card??? Hmmmmmm.... that would concern me as the HVX from what I know is roughly 1GB per min of capture... I know lots of people say it's overkill to have more information, but I would rather start out with more and have the option of downgrading... you can never go the other direction.

Yah heard about that . However there is no real time cards for vegas pro .. like for matrox .. and if I am to render constantly I'd much rather do it with CS3 (which already accepts Mpeg4 .. which is one of the Formats that the ex spits out

Hey Aaron... haven't talked to you since Dean's shop in Cali. How r ya.

Yeah I know. Especially with the move in technology and people's demand for better and better quality and delivery. If I shoot something at HQ now, it is more likely to survive farther down the tech delivery road. I wouldn't be comfortable delivering something now that was captured on a 3MP cam back in 2000 and the same goes with my Canon GL2.... it's just not cutting it for what I want in quality.

But then again. .that's just me.

cameras are expendables, just like computers, they are outdated pretty quick so it is not always smart to buy the most expensive if you dont need it and when you need it, just buy it and sell the other one or keep it as a back up

Very true.. but it depends on what level you buy at. A Leaf back (although $15,000 or so) on a Hassy camera still doesn't have competition from Canon and Nikon yet at MP/rez... so that would be a 3-4 year investment that's still sound.. whereas the aforementioned GL2 was bypassed pretty quick.

hell, my quad core mac desktop is still in payments yet the new and improved 8core kicks the shit out of it.

Here we go... the XDCAM at 1920x1080 records at 35Mbps VBR.... The HVX200 records in P2 mode 1080p (converted to 1080/60i or 1080/24p or..... lots of choices) at 100Mbps... that's a pretty big difference in the amount of information captured.

It's not just the codecs, it's also the increased rendering time and storage needed for true HD editing. We still need faster computers and cheaper storage.

Apple and Sony have never played nice together. Hope they figure this out as I am not giving up the FCP platform and this camera has had my attention since the first press release.

I am a pc and CS3 user too. It's great to have the best equipment, and I love technology. Editing HD like that though is still going to be a hassle for a while I think. There are more difficulties capturing and with the software, there are much longer rendering times than DV or even HDV, and one needs more storage too. It was bad enough upgrading to hdv and even that took a lot more work for lighting and editing and video encoding, so I can imagine how much extra hassle this is for you. I think all of us content producers are working harder and longer and spending more money just wrestling with technology, not to mention actually creating sexy, well lit videos!

Fucking cock sucking CMOS

You spend $7k and you cant even use it to take video of someone getting their photo taken with flash. (unless you you don't give a fuck about how your footage looks)

The rolling shutter scans the image from side to side in zones so unless the flash duration is super slow then part of the image will be lit and part dark.

The RED camer a is the same way but at least the sensor is upgradable so I imagine they will replace the rolling shutter with a global shutter.

Yes, the EX 1 has a great image and the latitude blows away the HVX but at some point it is goinig to piss you off if you shoot events or take video of a model having her photo taken by strobes.

There are top end cameras that have CMOS and do not have this problem. I really should not be down on CMOS, just the way they decide to set up the shutter.

I couldn't be happier with my HVX's.. I have clients that want DVC Pro HD and I can deliver. When I bought the camera I thought it was overkill for porn, now I have clients that want that format.

Yes, HVX is good but I would never recomend anyone getting for delivering to muliple clients. Too much educating the client and it will turn them off. Plus there is the added expense of storing on harddrives, backing up, shipping harddrives, etc.

It is great if the client requests P2 footage and is set up with AVID or FCP.

But if I was just shooting around and selling content to various people I would still stick with HDV because you can just send them a small tape which they are used to getting.
