    TALLAHASSEE, Florida - Florida's State Board of Education has voted to use the term "scientific theory of evolution" in its new science standards, the first time the word "evolution" has been included.

    Florida's current standards require the teaching of evolution using code words like "change over time."

          There are plenty of people that still think the world is only 6 thousand years old.

          Not even 100 years ago, it was illegal in many places to teach that theory - which was already almost 100 years old.

          As with anything (for instance, as in the theory of evolution) change takes time.

          This is good news, imho.

              These people kill me ...

              Opponents, who disliked both options, plan to shift their fight to the state Legislature.

              John Stemberger, an Orlando lawyer and president of the Florida Family Policy Counsel, said after the vote that social conservatives hope to persuade lawmakers to pass protections for teachers who offer alternatives to evolution in the classroom. Such academic-freedom proposals have been debated in Florida and other states for years.

                      The sad thing is that public school in the US isn't all that great anyway, that it is even worse in Florida and that the alternative here is private school run by ... Methodists, Catholics and Episcopalians. Maybe I'll send her to Jewish school. ;-)

                          Explain to her the climate, maybe?

                          I grew up in FL myself and can recall people dressed in White sheets and hoods marching in front of my town's Chamber of Commerce for one reason or another.

                          There's always going to be ignorance around her. She doesn't have to agree with it - and she can even work against it, but, accepting that fact's part of a happy life, imho.
