thats a horrible way to look at things in my opinion.

i have never been a fan of the "if you build it, they will come" mentality because its just not true. for every wikipedia - there is 1,000,000 carcasses of sites that went nowhere that were created by very clever, very passionate people with great ideas, lots of energy and enthusiasm and wonderful content and so on.

that thinking also fully discounts all the relevant factors that actually caused their success and brought them to that point of critical mass where the entire internet was linking back to them.

Inbound links are the most important factor, optimized content follows

It's important to optimize your web page contents for your keywords. By optimizing your web page contents for your keywords, you tell search engines that your pages are relevant to these keywords.

Your web pages will get top rankings for these keywords if there is no competition. Unfortunately, there's a lot of competition and many pages are optimized for the same keywords as you have chosen.

That's where inbound links come to play. If more than one web page is optimized for the same keyword,(Obviously) then the web page with the best inbound links will get the best rankings.
:2 cents:

baddog 02-16-2008 06:34 PM

Many people make their money by being the first to promote the product, then moving on as soon as it becomes popular and finding the next hot item.

No SEO required.

clickhappy 02-16-2008 07:02 PM

We should have a competition and see who can rank higher for a keyword within a few weeks.

Google ranks sites higher that have more ORGANIC imbound links. Why? Because Google figures that a site with lots of inbound links is important, popular, and relivant.

There is more to it than just this, but the algorythm that drives Google is a carefully guarded secret. Anyone who claims to know it or how it works is full of it.

As your site gets popular, and more people link to you, Google will notice and rank you higher.

Companies that create a bunch of bogus domains to link to you are not unkown to google. If the links are from BS places, or the context of the links is false, Google will push you to the very bottom of the list.

If you would all like to have a competition over a keyword I'd be happy to supply a domain for you to compete over. You can all take turns trying to increase traffic to my new site and I promise to honestly let everyone in the thread know who sent me the most traffic :kisskiss

A rule would be that the competitors couldnt register a new domain name for it until after the competition starts. So everyone is on the same level playing field.

PS. by the way .. I didn't said above mentioned factors are the only ones to affect ranking, but wasn't that information helpful?

Whose broke in this thread?

I mean other then yourself Jet. You post in 25 Contest threads a day and you want us to beleive you make a good living at your online business. Do we need to bump some threads to show how sorry your broke ass is?

Whats funny Jet, is that there is people in this room who get as many sales as you make posts in a day.

Several times over a few boards with varying degrees of success etc Amazing how many haven't heard of it in this thread or maybe not so?

Really just wanted to comment on the WG post. Always amazes me how many people hang on and believe every word from Google employees. Why on earth do people believe Matt does tell the truth and even quote him as 'proof' of something do you think?

We hired a writer to help build a knowledge base, and instructed him to cite references . . . as long as it was not Matt.

Great arguments...

When I update my blogs, they go to the top in Google, and it says "15 minutes ago"... Telling the surfer that this specific article they found was added 15 minutes ago to the blog...

IF I never update, the article never gets to the top and it would never say that it was updated with that specific article 15 minutes ago.

Anything to say or you will keep bashing with no arguments? :pimp

Updates DEFINITELY get you to the top and I just explained you why they do.

you didn't explain anything. you made an unsubstantiated and nonsensical claim. and like all other claims here, they are taken out of context of the big picture that takes ALL factors into consideration.

"updates get you to the top" - for what? for your own domain name as a phrase? for what exactly? can you rank #1 for "live cams" just by updating a site every 5 minutes with those keywords? of course not.

getting crawled more frequently due to frequent updates has nothing to do with ranking for terms you target... neither does an update getting indexed in 15 minutes.

it certainly doesn't make you rank higher for a specific phrase. if that was the case, everyone would be focused on generating text/updates and updating every 5 minutes... but they aren't... are they? people aren't doing that because it doesn't matter.

If you think you can get on the top with terms like "Pussy" or "Sex" then we must finish the discussion right here..

That said, yes, I get on the top when I update my blog, believe it or not.

And of course, that it was already obvious, nobody is talking about "sex" or "pussy" here, that would be very stupid.

You don't seem to have any solid arguments here. You are taking things out of context and shooting nosense statements. Classic from someone who has no clue what he's talking about.

uhm.. yeah. you simply update your blog and "get on the top"

its not clear what that means... but you obviously own google.

you've unlocked THE secret

ok.

i apologize

a reminder of why seo threads are pointless. those who know aren't going to share specifics and show all their sites/networks for others to deconstruct and analyze and those who don't know end up being the ones giving advice.

hmm yeah.. you get on top of google with terms like "Pussy" and "Sex" by putting a few links in your signature at GFY.... :winkwink:

you're right. how silly of me to start building a network of sites that collectively builds 1000's of backlinks day in and day out, get talked about on radio shows, get blogged about, get reported as news and even are the topic of discussion of places like the United Nations... without me doing a fucking thing.

i must be retarded.

but not you... you own a few blogs and think you will make money by updating them 5 times a day with no real concept of how search engines work and rank sites and how you to compete and rank for competitive phrases. enjoy your default 300 hits a day per site. keep telling yourself its the hard work and skill.... hopefully you won't be too crushed when you finally realize that small amounts of traffic are easy. its real traffic thats hard.
