Sabres vs. Panthers. Zednik takes Jokinens skate to the neck in a freak accident. I was watching the game live it was surreal. A trail of blood half way up the ice.

Currently stable and in surgery thanks to the Buffalo medical staff.

You're right. It's VERY surprising this doesn't happen more often. After looking at it, not that this wouldn't have been scary too, but Malarchuk's looks to have been a LOT worse than this one.

It isn't exactly infrequent that a skater has his legs taken out from under him and his skates ARE flailing in the air. Just earlier today I saw a nice candid pic of Dustin Penner falling down with his skates neck high. Let me see if I can find it.

Happened to a buddy of mine when we where playing for our high school team.

Needless to say the next practice, coach had a neck guard for every player.

Friend was fine, the cut was smaller and didn't hit a main artery but we all got pretty freaked out and scared.

NHL is a fast game and it's surprising this kind of accident doesn't happen more.
