Portions of the Real ID Act pertaining to states were scheduled to take effect on May 11, 2008, three years after the law passed, but the deadline had been extended to December 31, 2009. On January 11, 2008, it was announced the deadline has been extended again, until 2011, in hopes of gaining more support from states.
FYI most the "cool" states have already written laws localy to deny this from ever happening...
Lots of problems with the cool states writing local laws to deny. First federal law overrules state laws. Second, what happens when you try to travel? You can no longer get on a plane without your papers, I mean, National ID.
The problems with travel do not stop there. Say I live in a state where I do not need my papers. Then I travel by car to another state that requires you to have your papers. Some states may even require you to swipe your ID when you pass through toll booths. You are no longer free to travel your own country.
The law needs to be challenged constitutionally for anything real to stop it from happening.

What type of stuff are you guys into that a national id would be a big deal? I travel a lot and my concern is more about losing my ID's then trying to avoid them.
I really could care less. I don't get the hype behind "big brother" stuff.
It's called STATES rights. Real ID is UN-Constitutional. It serves no purpose other than for the government to keep track of ALL it's people. It won't prevent one terrorist attack.

This is the dumbest shit I have read in a long time on GFY. You have ID now. 90% of the time you are in your own city, state etc and can be ID'd at any minute so the big deal of police or federal agencies being able to do this on a national scale?

This is not true at all. You won't need to have "papers" but instead a national ID, which will replace your current ID - Your driver's license.
You need your driver's license to do nearly anything today anyhow. You can't drive without it, can't fly without, and need it to use your credit card (Well, they are supposed to ask for it.)
I dont see much of a difference, it's more of getting all the states on one platform instead of having fity different kinds of IDs.
This could be great for our industry. The next time someone under age gets a fake national ID and we use it for our records... We can blame it on the federal goverment instead of California ID - such as the case with Traci Lords.
