![]() ![]() ![]() Republic, by Charles Sheehan-Miles Charles is an old friend of mine. He wrote a book about the Gulf War (he was an Abrams tank crewman in the war) that did very well. He recently released a new book called "Republic". I heard about it on Facebook, ordered it, and when it came in, I started reading. Next thing I knew, I was closing the back cover, and it was around 6:00 in the morning. It's really that good. The book is basically about civil war in the US, in the not-too-distant future. What's surprising, however, is the way the war begins - the events leading up to it, etc. Most books of this nature have an obvious protagonist - some kind of evil leader that stirs things up. In this story, the characters on both sides believe they are the ones with the right ideas. Charles' character development is fantastic - you'll really understand their motives, and will probably develop your attitudes towards them early on. But, you will also probably find yourself changing your attitude several times as the story develops. This book is so realistic it's scary. It is fiction, but it's also a wake up call to the apathetic citizens of the US, as to what may possibly happen in the future. In general, the Department of Homeland Security has been given a lot of power, and they seem to be abusing it. This leads to an aggressive armed attack on what is actually a labor dispute at a computer chip manufacturing facility. Several people die, including two DHS agents, and the board is set for what is to come. What does happen afterwards will surprise you, and how it all plays out, well.. you'll need to read the book! It really is a fascinating story, and it parallels events that are occuring today. It's so well written you'll be finding yourself wondering if this wasn't really happening today. Check it out. It's worth your time: Republic: A Novel of America's Future You can also read a lot of it free, online, at http://www.sheehanmiles.com/moduleid/36 There's an HTML version, an e-book, and an RTF file available. |
