Noise From My Hard Drive / Light
I bought a new comp a few weeks ago.
Now, the hard drive light on the front makes a ticking noise every time it lights up (or should i say it Co-ordinates with the hard drive light coming on), but every so often, the noise stays on for 15mins or so, as the hard drive light goes like crazy ! It's gonna drive me insane !! Is shit installing on my comp from the place i bought it from ? Can i stop it ? I'm running Vista. Or does the computer just suck ass. ![]() |

what kind of hard drive? is it a loud noise? run the diagnostic tool from the manufacture of the drive and see if it reports any errors

Depends on the kind of ticking. You might be confusing the sound with just the sound the hard drive makes as it reads or writes (depending on the manufacturer of the HDD)...
Or...it could be a bad ticking. Inside the HDD is a read-head arm...if the drive is defective, or has undergone a ton of use, that arm will sometimes move up or down slightly...if it does, every time it reads or writes, it will make a noise. Eventually that noise will stop, but when it stops, you are S.O.L. 'cause then your hard drive is done. As Sosa recommended, there are bootable programs you can run to diagnose the HDD (provided by the manufacturer) that will tell you what's going on. Also, you can enable S.M.A.R.T. in your BIOS, which will sometimes come back with an error. |

One thing is for sure: don't keep anything you can't loose on that drive .

First thing is to backup your important data, if you haven't already done.
How to fix? I don't know.

You definitely should do a backup. I had a harddrive fail last year and it was a nightmare.
The ticking is probably just the noise it makes while accessing data. And, some computers will make these noises when you aren't even doing anything on them, just because they are turned on.
