all 3 were original and great in their own right. hard to say who founded punk...one could even make an argument that punk was started by the New York Dolls, MC5 and/or Iggy and the Stooges.
Just depends on how strong of an argument you want to make for each

In that Ramones documentary Joe Strummer said that The Clash wouldn't have been given a chance by the UK market if it hadn't been for the rising popularity of The Ramones in New York...

Tough question. The Sex Pistols definately became the 'Poster Boys' of punk(especially sick Sid Viscious). The Ramones we're there at the beginning and never changed their formula (nor their clothes and haircuts).
But The Clash were much more gifted and varied musically. The Hansons? The 3 brothers? mmmbop? Please..you know they win... |

there are two great bands in this question and The Clash and The Ramones if I had to chose I chose The Clash they were a more important band to the social structure of the time their music had a message and a meaning. The Ramones their music was more fun didn't really have much substance.
The Sex Pistols however were crap they were the original boy bad a bullshit manufactured product who soul purpose was to make money buy exploiting a current trend at the time they are the backstreet boys of punk and deserve no credit or accolades

I'll have to go with the Clash. I had no use at all for the sex pistols music. All Sid Vicious had was the name, he couldn't sing fir shit, couldn't play for shit either. He was a personality only, and to me that sort of crap only smacks of overrated hype. Sorry to you pistols fans, :D
The Ramones definitely had their moments, some decent tunes, but the Clash soar far above the others in my opinion.

Oh and before i forget my though, The Sex Pistols were the most punk rock in the sense or grungy and well blatantly "bad ass" getting booted from the UK. Not giving a shit, make $0 off their album. Getting cans thrown at them and just starting a fight not caring (sid). Too bad Nancy came into the picturee

Started punk..well that disqualifies the Clash but also you have to talk about which scene.
Anyway, they are three totally different groups. The Pistols took punk to the British masses and popularized an attitude and produced ONE very important album in the history of music. However, it would be hard to insane they are the 'best' of any type of group. The Ramones were great fun and but if you are asking which is the best overall band of those three then it is The Clash because they produced the best overall songs to my ears and kept the British punk notion of politics being a part of punk and Joe kept that up until his death. However, I still think the Buzzcocks in their prime were better than all three. |

Thank you ...the New York Dolls don't get the place they deserve in musical history. Not only can they be attributed with an influence on the start of punk they also did plenty to bring glam rock around in the UK.

Ummm... there is no contest here. The Ramones shit all over the Clash and the Sex Pistols. A couple of good songs or one good album does not a great punk band make.
It's arguable that Iggy and the Stooges started punk rock in the late 60s anyway.

I have to admit that I smile to myself every time I walk past the 100 Club on Oxford Street in London. I used to catch my bus home from work home right outside of the club and even though now it is usually Salsa lessons on offer it was nice to know that the club where London punk was born is still open. |

It has to be the Sex Pistols...
But I am biasied... Why ? Cause 1) Im from England and 2) I have actually met Sid! When i was a child I used to stay with my grandparents in the summer, who lived in London. They had a small flat above a shop in the kings road... This happened to be just a few doors away from SEX (Malcoms Shop) In the summer of 76 or 77 (I forget exactly) I used to go out to play outside and watch the punks with their 'silly hair' as they walked up and down the street, going in and out of SEX... Allthough i never remember seeing 'the sex pistols' (all four together with glen matlock in place of sid) I do remember Sid himself coming in and out the shop, and rolling about on the pavement once, wearing a rubber tee shirt which was way too tight... Obviously, I didnt know him as Sid... But because i saw him a lot, and because he saw me a lot, eventually, he used to say, 'alright mate' or 'alright my son' and give me a big thumbs up, and nearly stik his hand in my face when he did it... ! I was about 7 or 8 at the time, but i remember it like yesterday Fast forward to early 2001, and I got to meet Steve Jones, while I was in LA... (Long story, but he was cool) Finally, i was also told by a music exec guy that rotton / lydon had a bar in the marina dell ray, and he was going to take me down there, and intoduce me to him... But it never happened But anyway... Waffle over.. i vote for the sex pistols... thankyou, and goodnght |

I actually think the legacy of the Pistols suffers from the Sid association. He had little to do with any of their music..he was a late comer to the band..he wasn't even plugged in because he couldn't play at all. Not even 'sex pistols' bad which in reality wasn't that bad because they could really play they were just filling a role.
John Lydon has continually been a head of his time musically. PIL was doing the kind of dance music that the Prodigy later made their name by way before them (Rammstien even give them a little 'This is not a love song' homage during one of their songs). Sid was that bad side of punk where it was just drugs and 'fuck you'. The 'fuck you' I like in punk is the 'fuck you' that is backed up with a real attitude and usually with a political/social message somewhere behind the attitude. The best British punk had that ..Clash, Buzzcocks, The Dammed, etc all had either a political 'fuck you' behind their songs or a 'fuck you I am going to a fuck who I want no matter what your god might think' behind them. Sid added nothing but something for people AFTER the height of punk to cling to and claim was THE punk. Btw..I knew I was going to marry my husband when I found out he was on the boat on the Thames with the pistols when they got arrested for playing for the Jubilee. The UK is SO different now since those arrests were possible and a lot of that had to do with the attitudes of not following class system for the heck of it. That record simply could not be banned now ..it just would not happen. To me that is the legacy of British punk and it has nothing to do with Sid. |

Ever seen the Ramones documentary that was out a couple years ago? I was interested by how much of their success they attributed to coming to the UK at the right time in their career.
