Not only are they not THE BEST, they are not even "one of the best" ever. But for that period of time for rock and roll, they did alright and will get notes in the music history books. If for nothing else, because Axel was a fuck up.

QFTT they were the poster boys for all that was wrong with hair bands, no hair band can possibly make a top 10 BEST of anything.
Of all the hair bands they are certainly one of the best. They had no originality, they were simply doing what was popular at the time.

Right on, I never doubted the incredible impact that Beatles had on the pop culture of the 20th century, but if I was alive at that time, I would be a serious The Who fan.
They were more contraversial, their texts were smarter, they were heavier and they were fun.
The same as Jerry Lee Lewis vs. Elvis - I like Elvis but Jerry Lee ROCKS a big time, the killer could kick more ass and we will never know who would be THE no.1 (especially once Elvis got a bit less hansome and moved to Vegas), unfortunately, he got into his wild marriage..

What concerns the whole northwestern rock boom of the early 90's I seriously recommend to check the:

"Hype!" documentary that describes the Seattle and Northern West Coast scene in a very relaxed yet informative way, I have seen that on German cable long time ago and had a chance to check that recently again.
The soundtrack is great too - many bands that kicked ass never made it medially big as Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice or Pearl Jam.
I personally found "The Gits" via this documentary and it's a long term relationship for sure.
