Time Warner to Test Tiered Broadband Pricing

Time Warner to Test Tiered Broadband Pricing

NEW YORK, NY -- In the wake of the Federal Communications? Commission?s investigation of broadband internet service provider Comcast?s traffic-management policies, other broadband providers are beginning to seek ways to keep themselves out of the line of federal fire.

According to Dudley, about 5-percent of Road Runner?s subscribers monopolize as much as 50-percent of the network?s capacity.
This is the problem, 5% make it hard for 95%

Personally I think it will come, the ISPs can't run a business where 5% put a strain on their Networks. They will have to invest to make the service run smoothly for people who don't want to pay.

Less Torrents and freeloaders = better service for the rest of us.

I doubt if any members, except the ones with auto downloaders sucking down sites, will suffer. They might find their connections run faster though which will add to the enjoyment levels.

Better to get them to pay for what they are using than cancel them. Some will cancel themselves and some will pay. Also the ISP canceling the user puts the onus on the ISP, this way it's the customers making the decision.

Weren't you complaining about one affiliate slowing down your servers for everyone else a couple months ago?

The CPUC might have something to say about it.

Wrong.. They're looking to the future when EVERYONE will be eating up a shit load of BW and they want to change things now by pretending to cry about how hard it is for them so they can make buckets of money later.. Can you imagine if they were billing per G like the phone companies bill per minute??? Which is exactly what they want to do... This is all about fucking over the consumer to make as much money for the corporations, aka rich people.

How do you think that's going to affect your membership site sales? Cause now that potential member has to consider that not only does he need to spend $25 to signup to your site, but then he's going to need to spend additional bucks watching all your videos... This is BAD for all online businesses that deliver video content. Nothing like having your market shrink.. Shrink it by making it hard for people with dialup (still a large portion of the surfers) to enjoy your site.. shrink it even more so that only those making decent money can afford to sign up... but blame all the free loader sites out there instead of your own stupidity... Porn needs to be a Motel 6 model, not The 4 Seasons. Fuck there's too many morons in this business...

i hope you realize that the cache detecting nation of the current RTF for the torrent protocol means that it is actually more effecient that downloading streaming videos.

local loop clusters of content will be significantly cheaper for an isp to deliver then streaming/downloading from a central server.

if they were truely trying to prevent abuse of bandwidth they would be implementing bit torrent cache on net.

This is trying to recolor fair use abuse as protecting the network for the majority.

it to protect their cable monopoly.

tiering has NOTHING to do with "evil downloaders who cause connection to slow down for others"

I might be wrong but I thought they can't start cutting out some use or discriminating. Isn't that what got Comcast into trouble.

But charging for excessive use is something they can do.

While I'm not against tiering per say the caps TW is talking about range from 5 GB to 40GB a month. That's a fucking joke. No reason they can't cap their 8 Mbps tier at 400 GB not 40 GB.

You do realize that when you purchase cable or telephone or DSL from one company, then switch to another you are using the exact same facilities, right?

In canada, every ISP has 5 + choices of connexions that goes by MBIT, and each one of them have a different monthly bandwidth limit.

If you go over that limit, you're billed for overage

I thought you replied in the thread about this several days ago? Damn I posted a big rant in there too.. not gonna do it all again, but I'll summarize.

I pay for UNLIMITED access. Period.

If time warner wants to change their billing model: Just Do It!

But having an entirely internal test become a NEWS story for mass publication is an incredible marketing plan that we can all learn from. Kudo's to them. But dont be a sucker.
