Government wants access to all your email, searches and transfers

Here is a nice little story about how our national intelligence director is helping to draft a bill that would allow the government to access any email, web search or file transfer you make.

    http://rawstory.com/news/2007/US_dra...ment_0114.html

If this makes it to the floor for a vote anyone that actually votes for it should be immediately removed from the senate.

access to web searches is probably the worst thing that can happen but i dont see it happening oficially

although if you have a google account and are always logged into it, then theoretically they can be recording all your searches as well

btw havent looked at the article yet, will do it later
    I don't use ICQ anymore.

I guess I thought email would be the worst of it. If you were doing searches for terrorist and stuff like that you could always defend yourself by saying that you were just looking up what these people were about. If you make a comment about blowing something up or write an email that is inflammatory it is your words and could hurt you pretty badly.

Big companies never delete any of the info they get about you, storage is dirt cheap. E.g. Google even keeps your photos on Orkut after you delete them AND delete your account - closed an orkut account a year ago, photo is still on their server, though Google did a big PR job in news about how they updated their privacy so that they have copyright for user photos only until the user has an account with them.

when I use a keyword search term and see some of the top searches in the world are related to child porn, underage porn, shit like that.. Makes me wonder why google doesn't offer the government a list of IP's who are making those searches. I'm against the government forcing the issue, but I think a company like google should take a stronger stance against child porn.

This already happens guys. MSN and Yahoo! turned over a shitload of search data awhile ago. Google fought it for awhile and I'm not sure if they'll give in. This law just makes it mandatory, but don't think they don't mine this data already.

Still - we should reserve the right to do stuff that we don't want our government knowing about, I think.

It's called privacy has nothing to do with what you are or are not doing.

You probably don't do anything illegal in your bedroom either but would you want cameras installed and monitored by the government?

That's not the point. the point is at some point we should be able to expect a certian level or privacy. Would you like a cop to follow you 24 hours a day? You aren't breaking any laws, but he is there just in case. Would you like someone to monitor what you watch on TV or what books you read or music you listen to while you are in your house. You aren't doing anything wrong, but they just want to know.

For me it is all about starting the ball rolling. Once you start taking away liberties it is hard to get them back and more easy to just continue to lose them.

Unfortunately there's not a damn thing to be done about the loss of privacy in the US. Most people don't even care unless it affects them on a personal level, and by then it's too late to change. Wait until they roll out universal health care. You will be told what to eat and when to eat.
