Flat Screen TV Recommendations!

So it is finally time. I am going to be picking up a new flat screen TV for my Game room. I am looking for 55+ inches.

Let me here what you guys have and what you recommend. I am even debating going with HD Projection. So let me here all the pro's and con's that you guys have about those too.

Talk to me!

I have a 50 inch Philips Plasma. Can't speak highly enough about it. DVD's are awesome, Playstation 3 is incredible... Everything I throw at it, it chucks it right back at me and in even better quality.

Samsung is good too but I had a bad experience with them, generally tho they're good.

Buy a Plasma. The color is better and the speed is much faster than LCD's (so no motion blur), and the blacks are very black (very important).

Make sure the TV has at least 2 HDMI ports. Ask to turn the TV on in a room without any sound at all because some TV's have fans in them to cool them down. Noisy fans suck.

Of course, get only a 1080p tv - forget 1080i.

Prices drop on TV's all the time and stores are anxious to get everything off their floors coz new models at lower prices arrive daily. No matter what their price, they have room to bargin. Ask for a discount, or free delivery, or a free stand, or free box360, etc.

Do NOT buy the extended warranty bullshit. It's 90% commission to the sales rep anyway.

Do NOT buy any of those bullshit "power conditioners" from Monster Cable or similar. They are a complete waste of money on TV's and stereo equipment.

Buy GOOD HDMI Cables, but don't bother with MONSTER Cables. HDMI cables will delivery your signals digitally to all of your components which is what you want. However Monster cables are easily 3-4 times more expensive for no reason whatsoever.

CHEAP HDMI cables have problems with the physical size of the connectors. just a mm off makes for a loose connection that can cause data loss between your DVD and TV, resulting in a black screen while it re-syncs.

Enjoy your new TV!

If your room has the space to sit far enough away, why not go with a professional projector? Have yourself a nice 100 inches or so

I actually had the dilema of picking out a new tv. I was gonna go with a 58-inch tv, but figured that perhaps it might be too big, so I went with a 52-inch Samsung LN-T5281F http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/d...=LNT5281FX/XAA
It's actually the new thing in LCD tvs, as it's not like most, it's an LED LCD which gives it a 500,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, which is the best you can get on an LCD tv, it also gives a wider range of color, not to mention, it's better for energy consumption.

They do make a 58-inch version of this set, but it'll cost ya.

Mine is being shipped now, so I don't have a personal review yet, but it'll be here next week, and I can't wait

Oh yeah, this is where I bought my tv - http://clevelandplasma.com They have some of the best prices around and they're a HIGHLY trusted seller on ebay with 581 PERFECT feedback 100% !!! check them out.

I replaced my LCD with a plasma and love it, although the LCD might be more reliable long term I wanted the colors only a plasma can produce.

I'm looking for a new TV as well and i'm leaning towards the Samsung LN-T5271F.

I've been lurking on an AV forum and there has been a lot of talk about yhe difference between Samsung's 71F series and the 81F series which is the way you went. In a nutshell the consensus was the 81F had nothing over the 71F in terms of performance and didn't warrent the added expence. A few that had bought the 81F even returned theirs for the 71F.

They were saying the best TV out right now in that size range would be the 60" Pioneer Kuro PDP6010FD and in second was the Samsung 52" LN-T5271F.

That's what the users were saying on that forum so take it for what it's worth.

i have a 55" RCA Projection and its awesome. HDTV. I have xbox 360, hd dvd, and hd channels on cable, it looks amazing. of course i know you will have a dope surround system too. there is no point in having a ferrari tv and a pinto type stereo. there are a lot of good plasmas in the 55 and 60 inch range right now. pricing is coming down tremendously now.

Honestly, DLP projection with LED bulb is the way to go. I have a sony 60" SXRD XBR2 - There is no LCD or Plasma screen that I have seen that has a picture as good as this unit.

Unless the space that the TV takes up is an issue and wall mounting is necessary - there is no good reason to pay the premium for Plasma, especially in that size. I wouldn't want to have an LCD any bigger than 50/52"

That being said, the DLP units with LED lamps are very shallow.. even mine, which has a traditional bulb, is only about 12" deep (if that)

IE this samsung unit

Scratch front projection off your list unless you have total light control and plan on watching in almost complete darkness. If you plan on playing a game of pool with the TV on in the background, the picture will be too washed out. You really need it as dark as a movie theater to enjoy front projection, unless you don't care much about the picture quality and just like the biggest screen you can get.

Hi, I got this and its what TV "should be". Its only 25,000/1 contrast ratio lol but the picture is so freaking clear and sharp especially with hidef dvd or tv the things like looking through a window more than watching a movie. Id love to see the new LED Tvs though it's hard to imagine how the picture can be any better than this TV is.

they are a little more expensive, but you can get the color reproduction and depth of image these Pioneers offer with any other brand. If you go to a store and see Pioneer next to any other flat screen, there is no doubt who's a leader in plasma technology. I wish they weren't that expensive.

I myself bought a 42" one 2 years ago. Paid $6999

I was going to go this way as the picture on the LED DLP TVs are awesome especially at that price however I've heard the life of the bulb is short, maybe 3 years or so and then it has to be replaced. That's what got me thinking about paying a little more and getting a quality LCD

I'm hoping to build a nice two storey extension to the side of my house late this year maybe early 2009. Defo gonna have a game room downstairs and a new master suite upstairs. Would be cool to have a games room where my friends could come round, play pool, watch sports, play PS3 etc

Buy NO PLASMA, they shit the bed after two years and act up when it comes to transporting them. We went through two already. LCD is the way to go. Sam's Wholesale > Vizio.

Not for 55+, but for 50 inch, I could say (Panasonic Viera plasma anyway) TH-50PZ700U 50" 1080p (price is much cheaper --> $2.25k, from 55+ it gets much more expensive than it would normally be for more inches on the screen) or for 55+
Panasonic TH-58PZ750U 58" 1080p plasma HDTV --> $3.68k
The image is excellent. They all say Pioneer plasmas are slightly better, but usually $1-2k more expensive, it depends on the budget you wanna spend for this. For large screens, plasma is much better than LCD.

If you wanna use a link, use these:
Panasonic TH-58PZ750U 58" 1080p plasma HDTV
Panasonic TH-50PZ700U 50" 1080p Plasma HDTV
