I invited some webmasters to promote it over the past couple years. But over the past year if anyone emailed me about it then I would allow them to become an affiliate as long as I felt they would be honest and good affiliates for my site. |

I will say that money is always tight mainly because of me being stupid about things. Even when you make alot of money the expenses build up and you sometimes loose track of how fast money can be spent. My site is very profitable but I went crazy on personal stuff. I bought a big house, nice new cars, in 04 I took like 6 months off, in 05 I lived in europe for 3 months, I go to the bahamas for a couple weeks each year, I fly first class everywhere, always stay in suites, I payed cash to furnish an entire house with the best stuff, I even spent $20,000 on some oriental rugs that now smell like shit because some water spilled on them, I also burned a few hundred grand into a bad business investment. I was just plain stupid. I thought I made so much that I could afford to throw money away to have fun or take risky investments. I regret it. I could of had $5-$10 million in assets by now and move on to some very big business. I am trying to be more conservative because I want to invest more in my site right now plus save up alot for other large businesses I want to get into. |

Where did everyone go? I leave for a little and was expecting to come back to alot of discussion about the tube sites, future of paysites and the industry, and stories how other webmasters wasted money so I feel better that I was not the only one :Oh crap
I guess britney spears is a better topic :upsidedow |
Of course, this is GFY. If you want serious discussions check out ADX ;)

jpv you're doing well no doubt about it. Retention is a funny thing, it's probably the most misunderstood thing in the business by most webmasters. Numbers are easily skewed by sending more traffic than the historic average used to grab those rebills, analyzing too short periods, too long periods and so on. It's almost impossible to compare the retention of two paysites unless you're sending so much traffic evenly to both sites to make the noise statistically insignificant. The more traffic you get, the closer one's retention gets to the industry average. |
Some big stats in this thread, wow!

I agree and disagree... I agree that if you have a very high sales month then the next month will naturally have many rebills. And if that next month has low sales then it looks like your site gets many rebills compared to initials. I thought this would come up in this thread and that is why I made sure I did not take advatage of skewing the numbers... Actually I can't do this because my sales have been steady over the past couple years... even going up gradually. I don't have months when sales are huge compared to prior months. My sales have been very steady. So no the numbers are not skewed. Something else that should be noted... My initial numbers inculde almost 10% NON RECURRING transactions. So to be fair I could lower my initial transactions by 10% to show the true recurring numbers which would be $114 per sale from recurring alone. The non recurring inital transactions bring the average $ per sale down but the recurring transactions are very strong. I don't agree that the more traffic you get, the closer one's retention gets to the industry average... unless your site is average. The simple fact is people will stay longer at a site they like rather than a site they don't like. If I push more traffic to my site it will not bring down retention. BUT... affiliates can make a difference here and many programs probably have seen this... When you have lots of affiliates who run wild it WILL bring down retention. It was common practice and still is for affiliates to use non-exclusive content to promote a paysite even if that paysite does not have that content! How would a customer feel after going to a gallery with some video clips they like and all around that clips is ads for a paysite... the member joins that site but that site does not have the full video the member was hoping to see! So yes... if you send more traffic by misleading customers then your retention will come down. But, you don't need to mislead people to gain sales. I never will and I will never let my affiliates do that so my retention should not drop to an "average". |
This thread delivers :thumbsup
jpv, thank you for the inspiration! I printed adultmillionaire.com a while back and read it with pleasure. It sure shows how you need to be patient and focused to be successful! keep up the good work and motivational posts on here! Just a simple question: What are the main prerequisites to be one of your affiliates? |
My advice to anyone running a paysite:
There's 3 types of surfers: stupid ones that forget their rebills, logical ones that weigh the value of a membership and ones that cancel right before they even log in just to make sure they don't forget later. Statistically most rebills are lost due to billing issues (non sufficient funds) and surfers that cancel right away. That leaves you with a relatively small percentage of surfers who's retention is influenced by how good your content and members area is. If you have a decent working members area that's updated with high quality exclusive content you're already way ahead of the pack, however there is a point of diminishing returns due what I said before, where tweaking stuff, adding extra access, adding more updates is just going to cost more than it brings in. |

Thanks. I also hope to bring on some great affiliates this year. But like I said in an earlier reply many big and old time webmasters don't change programs much. So it is hard to convince them to try us out. good luck :) |

To calculate retention you really need to figure out,
How many NEW sales in October 2006. 2 years ago. Then figure out the average months of recurring of JUST those October 2006 new sales. After 2 years it may be 2.5 months recurring average, and every month it may increase by .1 or .2, for those sales from October 2006. You cannot do a lump average with old and new traffic to calculate retention. You will spend years in the small time when you may have more retention than you thought and could afford to grow faster. BTW you can hire me to consult on increasing profits 239-088-209 |

You don't think I know how to calculate retention that way? I usually look at the first 3 months of members. How many members stay to the second month and how many members stay to the third. This is what I use to make adjustments to my site but I don't post those numbers. I posted these stats as an average to show total sales and rebills in a certain period. It does also gives an idea of what the retention is since my sales have been steady. I did not get as far as I did without knowing how numbers work. I am spending years in the "small time" because I waste alot of money living extravagant instead of putting it into advertising my site. Which I guess could be seen as a mistake since my site has proven to be extremely profitable and I could be making alot more money now... but I would not do anything different the past few years. They have been great. Although, now I am going to be more conservative in my personal like and get back to business and really take advantage of this site I built. |
Daaamn 100 sales per day (on your own) would be nice... I can't even get close.
Right now I only submit to mgp's and tgp's, buy a few submit passes, adwords, buy feeder traffic, built a few small mpgs/tgps. Is there still money in freesites? Thats one thing i havent jumped into yet, but should... Are movie galleries / Picture galleries still the best way to feed your own paysite? I guess i just need to buy more partner accounts and traffic. Cuz im converting at under 1:500 and about 40% of my members rebill into the second month. I just need to build more traffic, but have been stuck at the same traffic levels the past few years :) |
how many Unique Visitors is that out of?
|

Those are good numbers. I don't know what your site is but it seems like you got something you can work with. If it is profitable for you then go for it. I know how it feels being stuck at the same traffic levels. At times I feel like I need a large cash boost to take my site to the next level. Just don't waste alot of cash on personal stuff like I did. Put as much as you can into your site if you see that it is profitable. This business is hard to get funding because banks don't want to help and it is hard to find people willing to invest the kind of money to make it worth while. Sometimes just plain grunt work and patience is needed to grow. |
congrats! good work :)
