The late-night talk show host parade gets bigger tonight when Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert return to the air.
Comedy Central's The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report are back, but without writers. While Stewart and Colbert are both members of the Writers Guild of America, they're technically coming back as performers, not writers. But who's actually policing that kind of thing? What's stopping both guys from, say, writing their own material in secret at home, memorizing it and, oh, pretending it was all off-the-cuff on the air?
No one, that's who.
I guess the WGA is relying on the honor system or something similar to it.
Unlike the other late-night talk shows, The Daily Show and Colbert Report depend more on writers more for all the skits and fake news segments.
So, the question remains: Who's gonna write this stuff?
Perhaps everything will magically write itself. And if that happens, the striking writers are toast.
