I have a digital cam that takes avi movies. The problem is that I can't put them on my site because their too big in size. So they take way too long to download.
I need a program that converts avi's into the smallest best quality alternative.

I've tried to compress it and all I get is audio with no video. Can someone please give me some advice?

Windows Media Encoder 7 ......... don't get 9 which is beta.

Try using Adobe premiere to cut the avi files and than use cleaner 5.0 to clean the movies, works A-Ok for me.
