A motivational thought re: Work Ethic.

30 minutes ago I placed an ad on Craigslist soliciting resumes for some part-time mainstream work I have coming up. The ad was for programmers, designers and seo specialists.

I've received three resumes so far. Thirty minutes.

To those of us who have been lucky enough to make a living in this industry please remember that the market for your skill set has been saturated. Get back to work or it will be you sitting on Craigslist hoping that someone will throw YOU a bone.

Hmm, how did you come to that conclusion? I hope it wasn't from the quick responses you received from craigslist. Actually the market for programmers and designers hasn't been this good since the 90's. Since that is the case, even programmers making 85k will be looking for jobs that will pay out 90k+ just because some companies are willing to pay that for the right people now.

Craigslist can be useful. After failing to get any serious applicants from GFY and readers of other industry boards in the local South Florida area, I recently placed the same ad on Craigslist for a part time employee (probably leading to full time pretty quickly) to help me out with video editing, video encoding, and assisting me in my office and I received about fifteen responses in a week. Most of them had some qualifications and experience with video editing. I ended up hiring a nice young man who just graduated last year from a pricey digital media college here in South FL and who just lost his video editing job with a sports related web 2.0 startup due to the venture capital falling through. He is getting up to speed pretty quickly here as he is familiar with the apps I use like Premiere Pro and Sorenson Squeeze. Only costing me $15/hr, same as my other part time employee. I am teaching him a lot, hope he lasts!

I agree that Craigslist can be very useful but it also can take a while to sift through so many useless pieces of info and as always...people who want to sell you something will email you on your address you place for responses. I think if you are lucky to make that connection to find what you are looking for, Craigslist is great.

I am always getting the people who have nothing of value to offer bother me from Craigslist...I still stay positive and take the time to sift through and find people with useful skills to work with

Thats because your ad sucks. I have had great luck with Craigslist. Hell, I found two of my most recent boy toys in the personal section, I bought my most recent car off of there for next to nothing (guy said it didn't like to start, well, that is what happens when you have a bad ICM module) and I have sold massive piles of shit using that site. And unlike feebay, its free and there are no fucking CC proc fees. So who cares - its worth it. Hiring people out of there for anything important is not advisable. But when I need a bitch for some bitch work (i.e. loading a storage unit up worth of shit into a truck, or a bunch of shit moved or some miserable job done, I put an ad on CL and find someone to do $300 worth of work for $20.
