domain & website building question

hello

i have a website and domain name that is over four years old. i want to redevelop the existing website to be focused on a niche topic by adding new content on this topic daily while keeping all the old content intact (content is general not topic related). to reflect this new direction i wish to acquire a new domain name for the existing website. i wish to build on top of the existing website for flavor reasons. will this be a negative factor in SEO?

the other option is to get the new domain name and make a new website that is separate from the old one. but, for flavor reasons i do not want to go that route.

You need to hire a seo consultant for a quick review of your situation, all you will get is bs, incomplete or just wrong answers on here from arm-chair-seos....

Never hurts to add new domains with new ips to your network if you link correctly.

Umm... If your old site is lets say #1 in google for a topic. And you want to change the topic to something else you have to realize that you are going to not be #1 for the same topics...

And the new domain is going to be hit with duplicate content problems.

visualize this:

a Target store has been bought and renamed to Targetor. it's physical location remains. the current, old inventory will also remain. new, niche related inventory will be placed up front.
what was once a general shopping store will now focus on shoes.

are you saying that Targetor will be hit with duplicate content problems? it's content was never duplicated, moved or copied anywhere else. it stayed in the exact same spot as it was when it was Target.

my website does not sell anything. it is not a store. i just used a store as an example.

now i'm no seo pro or anything, but i ws under the impression that with a site like this being 4 years old, a great deal of it's seo power comes from that site being on that domain for an extended period of time. would changing the domain not be a negative factor?

If you are going to get new domain names and build on top of your site, yes it will be affected; instead look at subdomains as to have more index able webpages. Now Search Engine Optimization and proper web server setup can be rather complex, if you have never have done so before then do yourself the service of learning how-to rather then taking the word of 95% of the SEO types here on GFY...

Keep in mind not to have duplicate content and that your keyword density is proper for every index able webpage.

Good luck,

.
