Because he was a wimp...it was rather widely known. I think it was Boy George that said years before that Micheal's fag hag used to be his fag hag. All three of the people mentioned started their careers when they did still probably have to worry a bit. Remember, Elton John was married and also sued a newspaper that said he was gay. Fast forward to last year and he has legally married his male partner (well, 'civil partnership by name) and they are pretty much the second queens of the country now.
