Slow PC, any remedies?

I have no fucking clue what?s going on, but my laptop has come to a almost crawl at some points. ICQ and firefox take almost forever to load up, from minimized windows. Anyone have and tips on how to speed up the pc?

Run Adaware, it remove spyware and other crap that slows up your computer.
Also run a disk defrag, remove any old shit you dont want/use

-start by cleaning up all start up apps (this seems to be the biggest problem for many who dont do this regularly). system info>start up programs gives you registry values for all start up programs, punch stuff you dont know into google to see what it does and if needs to start (also the start up folder inder start menu). if its not needed remove from registry.
-run something like adaware and see what pops up.
-defrag all drives

Do a reformat. All that other stuff will probably help to a certain extent but I guarantee that you will be much happier if you just take the 45-60 minutes it takes to reformat and install the essentials. Keep that puppy bare bones and run adaware every once in a while and reformat every month or so and you will be gold for a year or two.

I wish I could reformat, but that's not an option at this point. I am really thinking it's firefox that's killing everything.

so remove firefox and see how it runs then. More then likely you have some spyware on there, possibly some viruses etc. Go into MSconfig, and turn off some of the programs from starting up that you don't need starting up. *some things needs to stay on usually*

Delete your temporary internet files, cookies, and clear cache. Check for spyware.

If you run WinXP, there can a problem with IDE controller, if you put your computer into a hibernate mode everytime you stop working with them. After some time a stupid WinXP switches to a slower channel to connect to your HDD. I had the same problem with my laptop. It appeared to be a well-know bug. You could have the same.

I run weekly scans of Spybot, Ad-Aware, and AntiVirus. I've rarely been infected with really bad things in the past, but I found since I've been using these three programs, I've been clean.

A slow down could also mean a hardware malfunction. You could have a stick of ram on the fritz or a harddrive that's having errors. Google up your model of laptop and find out what components are inside there, then google those and see if there are any known issues and what their lifespans are.

I also reformat my c drive every 6 months or so as a general rule. Yes, it's a pain in the ass, but it keeps my pc and laptop running nicely. Good luck!

Try Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. It relieves the constipation.

I concur. It also doesn't hurt to check your start up programs and services.

Running a registry cleaner will help a bit but not too much. Sadly Windows starts to rot for reasons I can't understand after a year or two.

If nothing else works back up all your stuff and do a reformat/reinstall will get ya back up to speed.

jv16 powertools - has a great reg cleaner and file browser

Windows stores a TON of hidden temp inet files that you can't see with windows explorer. While that may not be the cause of your pc's sluggish performance, it's still a good idea to clean that crap out of there.

Most likely, your pc is getting bogged down from a bunch of programs starting up.

You don't happen to be running Norton, do you?

That shit is horrible and I instantly delete it from any PC that has it installed. It can slow your system a good 15 to 20%.
