Screamingly Fast Cable Last Night

I think the cable company was experimenting last night. I'm on standard cable Internet access, and I went to upload about 30 files about 6.5 Mb average size. Normally, an upload is about half the speed of a download. My cable downloads at about 28-30 Kb/sec and uploads about 14-15 Kb/sec (and a bit slower during "rush" hours).

Last night, the upload went at like 175-190 Kb/sec. 200 Mb uploaded in less than 15 minutes. Unless the upgrade fee is incredibly expensive, I'm going to subscribe to that!

On the otherhand, perhaps they're going to upgrade their service at no charge...

But anyway...Wow!

Cable bandwidth caps are a bitch. Awhile back you could uncap @home with some nifty software & get 300-1mb up, i think @home is gone now though right?

Hi Unseen,

I didn't notice anything diff. last night with att in portland.

about the same as normal. They do have the new Ultralink access Ava. in some areas though. but your cable charge goes to $80.00 a month, and you get 3000 Down and 256 or 512 up.

I always goto http://www.dslreports.com

for speed tests and cable forums, att, road runner new, etc.

best damm broadband site around I think

If you are only getting 28-30Kb/sec with a cable something is fooked up. I peak at about 300kB(B=bytes, b=bits 8 bits in 1 byte), and average between 80-150kB/sec. on the downstream and get between 20-30kB/sec on the upload. I know they changed the upstream from 128kb/sec to 256kb/sec , but think they did that some time ago. Either your neighborhood is full of internet junkies with cable, or something is screwed up on your network.

I love University ethernet -- I'm gunna miss it when I get my apt (and Roadrunner).

200-300KB/sec down and 400-500KB/sec up!!! Upload is faster than download!!!

What is fucked up is the cable company. Apparently they can set the speed where they want it. They probably want to set up speed tiers in order to allow a tiered pricing structure.

20k to 30k down? Damn, you are getting screwed hard!

We manage to get 1.4 mb down, but they cap our upstream at 16k. Sucks.

I am in generally the same area (Sherwood), and have a cable with AT&T as well. You should seriously call them though on 20-30kb/sec , even if its 20-30kB(once again B=bytes,b=bits 8 bits = 1 byte) you should call them. If they can tell you that its normal for you to be getting 20-30kB/sec .........
(which is equivalent to 160-240kb/sec -
dialup modem=56kb/sec
ISDN=128kb/sec
DSL=200-1500++kb/sec
Cable=900-1.8++kb/sec
T1=1.54Mb/sec)
...... then I would look into DSL. If you are getting 20-30kB/sec (which is the number that you see when downloading files, etc.) with your cable modem at ~$49.95/mo. you are getting screwed. A cable modem is definatly capable of 10 times those speeds, under decent conditions. It sure sounds like there may be an issue with some of your hardware/router/switch/etc. Either that or maybe the cable company offers a cheap $10 / month or so 200kb/sec package. I am no network expert but I would be more than happy to help out over icq if you call the cable company and they say its on your end. Or maybe your happy with 20-30k/sec, which honestly isnt that bad for email/websurfing. If you do need any help send me an icq at 5220296 and I will see if I can help.

ADSL for me.

Average upload: 30 k/sec
Average download: 30 - 200 k/sec.
(Depends who I'm downloading from.)

The fastest upload I've had: 83 k/sec
The fastest download I've had: 380 k/sec
