What are the upsides/downsides between the two please?

if you have to ask.....get fully managed hosting then learn from there if you're
interested. You'll notice most hosting companies offer primarily linux/bsd Operating
systems.....that's for a reason

No if you have managed hosting for you all works the same, both have ftp
and function similar from the user perspective...however management is
totally different, hence you should get fully managed hosting and if you want
to learn linux you can do so without fucking up your shit

No linux fully managed hosting....this means all you have todo is upload your
website and the hosting company will make sure your server will work and
stay working.......you could go with windows as well it's up to you really
but there's a reason why most hosting companies offer linux hosting over
windows hosting......

First of all, that is a virtual host .... so you have nothing to manage as such, aside from caring for YOUR site and YOUR scripts.

Secondly, that deal stinks ... look at the space and bandwith allocation ( if I can call that allocation ) as well as no SMTP .... and one single lousy database ...

I have Windows servers, I likes them. I like being able to remote desktop straight into the machines and manage them easily. The DNS, databases, all that crap are real easy to finagle.

it just depends on the applications you are hosting there. If you are using perll, php and mysql og java you should go with linux. If you have .net applications you should go with windows.

php scripts are notoriously famous for the amount of exploits available (examples include mambo / joomla). This is because php scripts are easy to write, so newbies can get away with sloppy programming.

java and .net make it more difficult to do sloppy programming and therefore are much safer choices. you can run both technologies on windows and linux, but .net is easier to run on windows.

windows servers being a security vulnerability is a myth, since a properly patched system is pretty secure. Especially if you use the DEP technology. That said, you can install an insecure application on any OS, be it linux or windows.
