Well, this is a little odd

But I've just got a good idea for a sitcom pilot.

Now to be honest, I'm not a great sitcom fan, I got all the episodes of Seinfeld in my stash, but other than that and maybe Night Court if you remember that one, I don't watch sitcoms.

And yet, it just struck me, this idea, and I think it's pretty good (oh, and obviously, all my friends think it's very funy. Ye hear ?) and no, before you ask, it's not about a bunch of guys and their daily routine, nor about guys, nor about routine, etc. It is original, and funny.

Now, what the heck do I do with it ? Anyone here ever pitched a pilot ? Know anyone who has ? Should I just put it in a drawer somewhere ? (Metaphorically speaking, I haven't actually written a treatment for it yet).

To be honest, my plate is pretty darn full at the moment, and the last thing I need is to be wasting time on network shade acts. And besides, I don't see how programming's ever going to improve to the point they won't want it, nor someone else coming up with it. So it is pretty safe to keep a decade or two.

Let the wisdom collective of gfy advise me.

You'll have to tell us what this "idea" is, before we can pass judgement... ;-)

Hey actually, a friend laid out on me a very fucking usefull bit of advice :

Once you've written your treatment, register it with the Writer's Guild of America. You do not have to be a member of the union to do it, and it'll only cost you $20. Registering your idea will prove that you had the idea first if it's ever questioned, and it'll protect you from having other people steal it. As an added bonus, the WGA registration number on your cover page is a subtle way to show that you're a pro who knows how to play the game. Details like that really help.
Here's the WGA registration url http://www.wgawregistry.org/webrss/

I figure posting it here'd be good in case there's anyone else in my position.

So, I'm gonna write a treatment for it, maybe a pilot outline too, blow a twenny to register it, after which I figure I might as well let you folks read it.

I figure I'ma post it here in a coupla days.

Draft rough scripts for a few episodes, and if possible act some of it out on video...

Having physical drafts and/or video will allow you to market it better, and very importantly make it easier for you to legally protect your sitcom idea from being "stolen" by those you pitch it too.

And of course consult / retain an experienced attorney in intellectual property law at the getgo.

Anyways, go for it - you never know, it could be a winner

Trust me, if I'm acting it out on video, it may catch on, but the funny wouldn't be what originally intended.

If it involves women trying to be funny throw it in the bin.
