Hosting companies-how would you respond to this?

From Jodohost.com earlier tonight. We lost all of our sites for about 20 minutes and there were a few other brownouts.

We are currently (8:32PM EST Dec 20,2007) taking a large DDoS attack with over a million packets per second and over 1 gigabit per second of transfer. We are working with upstream providers to block this before hitting our network as quickly as possible!

Are there ways of preventing this sort of thing without downtime? Anything you would have done different?

I would post their forum, where they explained in more detail, but not sure if that crosses the line for gfy.

Win14 shared IP Null routed - working on resolution

Win14's shared IP was null routed by carriers upstream in order to prevent further problems, we attempted a number of resolutions before taking this step but the attacks continued regardless of actions taken.

We are working to find the targeted site and move other sites to a new shared IP to correct this but it will take a number of hours. Sites on a dedicated IP will be working fine, but we do not encourage you to move to a dedicated IP as DNS updates alone will take time, we will be working to force out new DNS updates after changing the IP or finding another resolution in the meantime.

Sounds like they are right on top of it.... theres no way to effectively counter a DDOS because say for instance you get linked from a high traffic blog, well, your effectively being DDOSed as well with real traffic.

If your thinking of moving to another provider based on this, well, might want to wait it out and see what happens first.

I thought they did a pretty good job, actually. All of our sites are back online and seem as fast as ever.

I am curious to see if any other companies can see any issues with how it was handled.

I am ignorant to the hosting issues these companies deal with, but this seems like a pretty severe attack, and we only suffered 20 minutes total downtime, across the few sites we have on shared servers.

I actually didn't check the sites on dedicated, so can't comment on any impact there.
